Your all time greatest space battle in Sci-Fi.

Restricting it to films, video games, and TV shows so that awesome youtube videos can be posted.

My personal favourite visually is from Mass Effect 3.

I'm not sure if it's because you already mentioned Mass Effect or that it simply has the best space battles, but all i can think of is the attack on the citadel in the first one.

Someone set us up the bomb!
Less action but good drama in that final battle.

Also, Balance of Terror, Original Star Trek series, was very good.
"While investigating a series of destroyed outposts, the Enterprise discovers a lone Romulan vessel with a cloaking device. The Romulans, having never been seen by humans, are revealed to visually resemble Vulcans, casting doubt on Mr. Spock's loyalty as the two ships become locked in a cat-and-mouse battle through space."

I would say that the battle for DS9, when it was taken over by the bad guys, was pretty darned good. Taking it back was pretty good too.

Good space fights are more about the underlaying drama then the actual action. Your video clip was bad though, since most of the real drama begins after that clip. I guess that rule applies to combat in general. I'm thinking of lightsaber fights and the best ones aren't the flashy fights of the prequels. They're the ones where the fight was a part of great drama or the culmination of a lot of things.

In this sense I think my favorite space fight is in babylon 5 severed dreams -episode. It's a culmination of many story threads where the Earth alliance governement finally starts taking direct action against the people opposing it by bombing the colonies on Mars. This pushes things to a boiling point. Other colonies protest by seceding from the alliance and the battle lines are quickly drawn. Earth forces respond by sending ships to the colonies in an effort to put them in loyalist hands and keep them in the alliance. A fleet of ships is detected on approach to B5 and will arrive soon. It's time to choose sides and pay the price.

The situation provides good drama with a decent Sheridan speech in the form of a decleration of independence. No turning back now and wait for the inevitable battle begins. The fight itself is nice and long, but good quality videos of it are non-english. The ending culminates with B5+allied fleet winning barely only to find a second hostile fleet just as big as the first one jumping in demanding their surrender. They fought, but have no chance of winning this new fight. Another series of plot threads come to a culmination as the Minbari have also been forced to make important decisions and take a stand by protecting the station and driving off the Earth fleet.

Ten minute Babylon 5 montage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSa6Zl8fcyo

Because, you know as well as I do, that the ship battles in scifi are always too short. A Montage is the Only Way.

Star Blazers: Battle at Pluto

If you're a whipper-snapper or lack nostalgia, skip to the 3 minute mark.

It's like a 20+ minute battle, a clip is a clip and only posted for a general refresher to those that saw it. This is kinda a key moment in the battle, and would be confusing to see "the real drama" without seeing this clip first, for those that never saw it.

My inner anime nerd is demanding I give an obligatory refference to the Battle of Jachin Due in Gundam SEED. I was 12 when I watched it and I was in awe, screw how times change. End of the world Apocalyptic Gamma ray cannons in space, cheezy self sacrifices with cheezy "make the impossible possible" lines, nuclear genocide... Still love it.

More modern Space battle has to be the one from Serenity, I am a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar...

A lot of the Macross and Gundam series had some pretty great battles. These are the first that come to mind, but defending the Ptolemaios in season 1 of Gundam 00 ranks pretty high as do the numerous fights from Macross Frontier featuring questionable, but undeniably charming J-pop music.

Star Trek 8 and 10 had some good space battles (ok Star Trek 10s battle was followed by at least 3 facepalm moments but they tried)

Personally the Mass Effect 1 Battle of the Citadel is my favorite and in ME 2 the approach to the Collectors Base.
