Kids these days...

Well, for those kids out there: imagine you really screwed up your grades at some point in your schooling, and your parents made your life hell because of it. This is the whole shebang: no more allowance, social life, and constant berating about why you're not doing any better yet. You have, however, studied as hard as you could for upcoming tests, did your homework perfectly (and even showed it to them!), and other things. However, they just won't stop going on about how your grades are still bad, and there's nothing you can do about that until those tests come around.

The analogy breaks down somewhat when CCP is the "child" and the EVE playerbase is the "parents", but the same sort of attitude is there.

Give them a second chance, kiddies.

They better be! They've lost 20% struct already!

Please let me quote a post made by CCP Navigator yesterday:

Let me give you guys a little more information on what is coming. Starting next week we will be producing a series of 'In Development' video blogs which will look at what the various teams are planning for Winter 2011. I want to stress that these videos will not contain release dates as we are aiming to provide a lot of stuff and do not want to commit to a date we cannot keep. These will include:

Engine trails - Yes, that's right we are adding engine trails to EVE and we will show the work in progress so far.

New ships - Recently we featured a shot of the Tornado, the Deviant Art contest winner, on the EVE Facebook page. We were not happy with just giving out one ship so we will be showcasing all four new ships.

New nebulae - These new background sin the EVE universe are stunningly beautiful and will add to the immersion and feeling of being in deep space.

Team BFF - This team should be Best Features Fullstop and CCP Soundwave will give an overview of what his team has in store. Capital ship balancing, balancing hybrids, assault ships bonuses and much more will be added during winter.

Customer Relations - The Lead GM's will talk about changes to how petitions are handled, more options for Stuck petitions and how we aim to deal with your issues as fast as possible.

We are not just going to stop there. We will bring you more video blogs about what is in development for EVE Online.

That is exactly the wrong thing to be encouraging them to do.

We developers consider our time to be extremely valuable, and when given the choice of developing an exciting new feature or fixing a boring bug with a possibly tedious solution, we will almost always pick the former. This leads to a product feeling incomplete and half-assed, most likely with a userbase disillusioned with the developers.

Until the current bugs and imbalances are fixed, new ships are only going to compound the problem. New ships aren't going to make passive shield tanking balanced, nor are they going to make blasters useful. New weapon systems aren't going to make the Prophecy worth flying, and they aren't going to make EVE any less laggy.

^^ This. We have our new features and content, but they (and some preexisting content) are rather broken. Once those work well, then the shiny new things should come forth.

As long as I'm entertained, I will stick with EVE. Skill training into new ships and earning money to replace them after their inevitable destruction are the only things keeping me here. These things should become more fun and rewarding as long as the focus is set correctly by CCP. So many features are in EVE now that I feel that CCP should just step into polish mode by adding to the fun of features already implemented. I'm not talking about doing a car wash, I'm talking about a full scale tune-up.

To be honest, if they actually do everything in this next patch that they say they're going to do then there is very little left to improve upon in Eve. Granted, things will always need tweaking but let's think about it for a second. With just the hybrid balancing, supercap nerfs, FW fix, WiS including concourses and player-owned bars, there's really not that much left to significantly improve upon.

What I'm saying is that if CCP really does everything they say they're going to do, I don't see any reason to have any more expansions. Not saying we shouldn't get more patches for fixes, updates, etc., but new feature expansions? Are there any new features left? Again, not talking about fixes and promises kept for already projected game mechanics/gameplay improvements, but rather new innovations. I don't think Eve has reached the end of the line but I think that just to promise 2 expansions a year would only hinder the company because the player base is going to grumble that there's not enough content simply due to the fact that they've already given us so much at this point.

They've given us back ship spinning along with all the rest of the upcoming improvements; the only thing left I can think of would be a full-fledged Incarna "super expansion" where all their ideas are realized: walking in stations, concourses, bars with player interaction (bar fights would be cool) including games, corporation boardrooms for war planning and Dust 514 interfacing, etc.

Think about it. Unless they're planning on turning Eve into something like STO was aiming to be (but failed miserably) with having your avatar interface with planets directly on the planets, there's not much left in terms of innovation. If they put aside all their expansion plans and focused on making everything they've already got (including upcoming WiS) better, I don't think people would really mind at all not ever having another expansion but instead getting regular updates on existing features.

Eve is a fluid game, constantly in flux simply due to the ever-changing needs of players. If they are somehow able to stay ahead of that curve and keep the game properly updated with regular patches/fixes/features, expansions will be a memory and I really don't see many people complaining about that fact. To tout and promote a new expansion with this or that feature when it could just be a big update would be getting people's hopes up in a way.

Eve is the only game where the player base is constantly looking to the future instead of the present, and if they can somehow bring that excitement to the present, Eve will never die.

Because without constant innovation the game will become boring and stale. Without constant graphics face lifts it becomes dated. The new avatars, even if you happen to hate them, go far to make this look like a modern game and less like a holdover to 2004.

And, also, because the EVE universe is always changing. It's changing because the playerbase is changing. If CCP doesn't constantly refine, polish, and expand the product to match the demands of an evolving playerbase then those players will find something else to blow money on.

I know sometimes it's difficult to realize just how much you spend on incidental things each month or year, but seriously, EVE is very cheap entertainment compared to most things... If you are a smoker, smoke one less pack a week and pay for EVE, with money left over to pick up a cheap bundle of flowers for the EVE widow upstairs.

You are right that innovation and expansion keep the game interesting. However, I bolded the part of your post that I am trying to get across. It's all well and good that CCP are making new features, new ships, new avatars, whatever. However, both the new and old content will always need iteration, and I hope they don't forget that again.
