i am kinda new and i want to work my skills towards flying the best mining ship, like whatever it is that holds the most. anyone out there know which is the best so i can start training my skills in the right direction?

Mackinaw has the largest ore hold. Its T1 counterpart, the Retriever, is a good stepping stone on the road to the Mack.

If you're looking for greatest yield, take a look at the Hulk and its T1 counterpart, the Covetor. They are meant to be used in fleets where you're at the keyboard and have a dedicated hauler to haul the ore from the belt to the station.

As doomlord says, you want either the Retriever and later the the T2 Mackinaw, for maximum ore space, or the Covetor and later the T2 Hulk for maximum yield (if you mine in a fleet, i.e. with someone to haul the ore, or Orca support, or both).

There'll also be a new ORE Mining Frigate out in a couple of weeks, but I still can't remember what it's called. I get the impression it will have its own new skill, and be a nice stepping stone before you train for Retriever or Covetor (which require the same old Mining Barge skill as before, but might or might not also gain the new Ore Frigate skill as a prerequisite).

Mining frigate skill bonuses:
+5% to mining yield per level
5% to gas harvesting duration reduction per level
Role bonuses:
+100% to mining yield
+100% to gas harvesting yield
+ 2 warp core stabilizer bonus
Slot layout: 3 H, 3 M, 1 L, 2 turrets
Fittings: 45 PWG, 240 CPU
Defense (shields / armor / hull) : 225 / 175 / 200
Capacitor (amount / recharge rate / average cap per second): 250 / 125s / 2
Mobility (max velocity / agility / mass / align time): 335 / 3.6 / 1200000 / 4.04s
Drones (bandwidth / bay): 10 / 10
Targeting (max targeting range / Scan Resolution / Max Locked targets): 15km / 750 / 5
Sensor strength: 4 Magnetometric
Signature radius: 40
Cargo capacity: 50
Ore hold: 5000

If you want to cash in on some free Skill Points, make sure you have the Mining Barge skill trained to 1 before the 4th of December.

That will give you whatever the new Prerequisite will be as free skill under the " if you could fly it before, you can fly it after"-rule.

Most likely that will be the new Mining Frigate-skill to 3 or 4.

They don't give any free skillpoints.

Yes, Mining Frigate skill will be required to train/inject Mining Barge skill. It's not required to fly mining barges if you have Mining Barge skill trained to level 1 or higher.

Retriever for hi-sec mining, unless you have corpmates to protect you. It will do fine for a while.

After Retribution, the new mining frig will be good. You can get an early niche with gas mining at a frig level (the frigs stats will probably make it better than any other ship for gas). Takes a bit to train for gas harvestors, but may be worth it for a new player.
