So I found a nice Radar site in low-sec. Warped there did 3 of the 6 containers; killed half of the rats; but I had to warp/dock to a station to heal at one point. So in less then a minute, I warp back to the Radar site to find that it is gone... only the ship wrecks of the rats remaining for loot/salvage. Why did it happen?

Can someone explain to me what mechanics of the game I a am missing and how to prevent what happened from happening again?

This is normal behaviour.

Once a hack is started on a container, if you leave site for any reason, after 1 minute the site will despawn.

Exploration is Random. Random is Random... or is it?! http://docs.python.org/2/library/random.html

This is also true for Magnometric sites, not just for Radars. You can shoot at NPCs without problems, but as soon as you run a codebreaker/salvager/analyzer on any of the site containers, warping off will cause the site to despawn.

So the problem was that I warped out while hacking. But I can warp out and come back if I am not hacking/analyzing as I am warping out?

Does that apply for salvaging as well?

I can't find a definitive CCP quote to point you at but I believe from my exploration experience that as soon as you have activated a salvager/codebreaker/analyzer on a container in the site you can't leave without it very quickly despawning.

It's all about what triggers it. In profession sites it's triggered the first time someone activates a proper module on one of the site containers. If you've activated a module on those containers in order to access them, the despawn trigger is active. In combat sites it's usually killing the overseer/target of the site.

Also take note, that cloaking in the site also counts towards the despawn. Basicly once you trigger the despawn you either finish the site right then and there or abandon it.
