Hi all, I am a relatively new player with just under 800,000 sp and am looking to go into high sec exploration as I have heard i can be very rewarding and fun. I plan to eventually move into low- and null-sec for PvP and exploration but I need to be able to initially fund it. I was wondering if there was any certain way someone like me could find a good system to start exploring in or do you just pick somewhere at random? Also one last thing I am unsure of what to use for a ship as i can use up to a Moa but am not comfortable about how much I have to spend out of my wallet at this point. Is it best that I start with a cormorant put a fitting on there? Thanks all for the help!

High sec exploration is VERY competitive. Honestly, you are probably better off running missions at this point in time. You might could have some success in non-Gurista (Caldari space) regions.

Lol, bullshit. Sure it's competitive but he's still gonna make way more doing hisec exploration then he will ever make doing level 1-3 missions. I gotta agree with the non-gurista statement though. Angel space is way more profitable in the long run since it's so much easier to find good plexes there. Also you get shield boosters, afterburners and invuln fields which can all be really nice money.

hisec exploration is well worth it at low skill levels. you just have to concentrate on radar and combat sitesand pick the right ship to be able to actually finish the latter ones.

I should buy an Ishtar.

They're not exactly hard to finish up though. Provided you have a combat fit ship (not a hybrid explorer) there's nothing in hisec that can't completed in an acceptable timeframe by a ship such as an Ishkur. Not just that, if you should be caught in a DPS war you're frigate speed will help you warp faster, kill endbosses / buildings quicker and ninjaloot if you happen to loose.

I happen to do exploration in high and (mainly) low and whenever I'm in hisec my fleet composition is Tengu, Ishkur and Cheetah. In low I tend to do Tengu, Gila and Cheetah or Scimitar (probeycloakeyboostingtar) for the extra DPS.

the overseer in serpentis phi-outpost has a ~400ish active armor tank. an ishkur might struggle with that.

I should buy an Ishtar.

I will pay you 5 Million ISK for every Serpentis Phi Outpost you lead me to. Since they are useless to you anyway. Strike up a conversation with me in game teehee.

Ive done a couple Phi Outposts with a Blaster Harpy.. sure it takes time and some tricks, but it can be done..

Other than that, either the Ishkur or the Vexor (to be buffed in a few days) are good choises... If you happen to fly Amarr, Arbitrator also makes a nice all in one exploration vessel... Stick to Rads and easy combat sites, Im not really sure it can take the heat of a 4/10

Starting exploration is a great choice! Hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I do.

Ignore anyone who tries to convince you not to do it. They are plenty of high sec sites to go around.

Now, how to get into it?

I would suggest that you start in a Heron since you are Caldari and that is the exploration frigate for Caldari. You'll want the extra bonus to scanning you get from flying one. Next, pick up a probe launcher and some core probes. Later, you'll want to get a Sister's probe launcher but, for now, you probably don't have the ISK to do it.

I would suggest you fit your Heron for scanning (buy a couple of small gravity capacitor upgrade I rigs) and make sure you have a single drone. That drone will be your combat buddy for your first sites.

Focus on radar and magnetometric sites if you can. If you have a combat ship available you can try your luck with DED complexes but stick to the smaller ones (1/10, 2/10).

Check out http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Probing for more info.

Finally, learn the shortcuts for controlling your probes. Learning how to move them around quickly will make you a happy explorer.

I'd forget about trying to explore with a cormorant and start training for T2 light drones if you haven't got them already. The redone exploration frigates coming soon (TM) are going to be your best bet, and all use drones for dps. At first, only run radars with your exploration frigate of choice until you're comfortable probing for sites. From there, a vexor, arbitrator or gila would be a good next step for running combat sites while probing on an unbonused ship.

5nipe's Exploration Almanac blog is still pretty relevant and a great guide for newer players wanting to get into exploration.

I found two deadspace invulns in two days when I started doing exploration sites. And those were just the anomalies. 1.3bil total in loot for about 3 hours of game time. Granted, that's amazing luck, but you only need to get lucky once to have tons of cash to last you a while.

I would go to the Star Map and find dead-end systems that people probably don't have good reason to go to. You can find lots of sites that way. It's not as competitive as people make it seem. Convo me if you want.
