I just wanted to know if anybody had an estimate of how many t1 fit dessies it would take to gank a freighter in Highsec.

I know i could do the math and work it out "on paper" but i am hoping for someone with this kind of experience to inform me of what it would take to gank a freighter with dessies in-game rather then what i can come up with "on paper".

Also no need to ask me why i would like to know this is, it pretty obvious right? :D

Thanks!

Look, I'm sure Goons could pull it off but other alliances just don't have those kinds of numbers

This is a math question, but since people seem to think t1 rifters are a viable option, some arty fitted minmatar dessies might be a good option. That is some cheap friggin alpha damage!

Ballpark approximation here.

A freighter has in the neighborhood of 200k EHP. At the amount of ships needed to break that, DPS may be a bad choice because people firing late may get instapopped by CONCORD already being there, and end up not doing full damage. Therefore, I am using a T1-fit Thrasher as a starting point, and not a more DPS-ey destroyer like the Catalyst.

T1-fit Thrasher with good skills and an alpha fit does around 1000-1500 alpha. I'm going to go with 1000, since not everyone is going to have perfect hits or great skills.

This means 200 T1-fit Thrashers, or about 600 mil ISK worth of ships if you spend 3 mil ISK per Thrasher (a bit on the high end for a T1 fit, but whatever).

Conclusion: if you have 200 people who can fly a T1 Thrasher and are willing to nuke their sec status (and make a hisec node cry by summoning all of the CONCORD forever), it can be moderately cost effective to gank freighters with T1-fit Thrashers.

Addendum: to profit off of this venture (assuming you manage to loot the wreck), the freighter needs to be carrying at least 2x the worth of all the ships you spent ganking it. That means it needs to be carrying at least 1.2 billion ISK of goods.

Math!

35-40 T1 catalysts will do the job just fine.

We did it with around 20 T2 fitted in a 0.5 recently.

This sounds believable. 200k / 20 ships / 20 seconds = about 500 DPS per ship, which is reasonable with well-skilled T2-fit Catalysts. 20 seconds was a rough approximation of the time it takes CONCORD to arrive on the scene in 0.5. This is also only a 200-300 mil ISK cost, compared to my suggested Thrasher blob, and doesn't crash the node.

The problems, of course, are that everyone needs to engage at once (the more you delay, the less damage you will do because of CONCORD already being there), and that blasters are very short range. Congrats on making it work!

Awesome info right here!
and is 200 people in thrashers all it takes to crash a node nowadays? :P

anyways thanks for the info(from ISD and others), from what i gather, doing this is within the realm of possibility given my resources.

Well... It's not just 200 people in Thrashers. It's 200 people in Thrashers, each spawning 3-4 CONCORD ships to a single location in a system. That might be enough.

200 people each spawning 3-4 concord.

That could be fun to watch. 600-800 CONCORD in the same place

Also, have people turn their graphics settings to low, turn off effects, and turn off brackets. Have scouts, and for god sake, don't say primary the charon when there are more than one. For you, nothing sucks more than watching concord kill you and both freighters warp away because people split damage. It's great for the gankeed though.

And watch the sec status. In .5 sec, yes the catalyst can get a few vollies off, just pre-overload your guns. In .7 or higher, alpha rgrashers will work better.

Oh and lastly, don't waste ammo. You only need ammo for 3-4 vollies, don't max out your gun's magazine. Also have looting alts ready with enough cargo space. And loot your dessie wrecks too, especially if you used t2 fits. Oh and scram too. Nothing sucks more that watching the target warp off in half structure because it was aligned and no one scrammed. Shouldn't be an issue with a freighter, but well... Losing the kill and being concurred gor want of a 50,000 isk warp disrupt is not fun.
