Perhaps my google-fu has failed me, but I can't find an answer...

On expansion release day, how long is down time typically? I ask as DT for me is 6am, and I'm taking the day off work. I don't want to miss any initial player fireworks. As a noob player, this is my first expansion but..... I don't want to set my alarm clock to early.

Been following a lot of posts the last 6-8 weeks and I'm excited to see what happens.

I would advise doing Caldari Battleship 5 just in case.

Downtime is usually extended for big patches. And can last anywhere from 1 hour to a few days due to complications... But usually just a few hours.

Just make sure you have a full skill queue and you'll be set, longest I remember (memory of a lemming) is 24 hours... followed by a ton of resets Big smile

A good expansion or bad? I think I've seen it as short as an hour. My first expansion was I think incarna, which had the servers up and down for the better part of a day. It was when I learned to stick a long skill in the queue for patch day. I think I lost about 6 hours of training that day.

Thanks of the advice, but wasn't looking for suggestions. Lots of other topics for those. Just looking for any historic (or planned) times. That's it.

[edit] this was meant at the specific skill not the generalizations. Thanks to all for the comments.

They typically take the server down something like 4 hours before regular downtime on patch day, and plan to have it up again 6 hours later, which inevitably gets extended by anything from 90 minutes to 36 hours.

Who put the goat in there?

Truth.

Honestly, its a real crapshoot. Though the one they ended up giving everyone free SP for the day+ of server down was nice. It will be atleast a 1.5gig download, so that will add some time to get everyone up to speed, my honest guess will be server back online 6 hours later than normal. If i had to put money on a time, that would be it.

Also, on patch day, there will be alot of short "ETA"s given out by CCP if they foresee the patch taking longer. Typically there are several of these updated after the previous one expires. So, if they start saying "will be online in another 20 minutes" after they are already past their previous ETA...just go watch some Netflix or something constructive and come back in an hour. It's what i wish i'd done every. single. time.

suggestion is probably set your training queue for fighters 5 from scratch or something Big smileBig smile

simply because in all of CCP fashion which we all know and love, CCP breaks the server first a few times, then gets it working a few hours after another patch + the release

Edit: it's CCP's way of saying, go outside and see the sun for a while and enjoy real life till your sick of it again, then come back PP

Honestly mate, Patch day is probably the WORST day to take off work. While CCP have got much much better at rolling out upgrades, mistakes can and do happen. Your typical patch day is characterized by endless posts from CCP saying "SOON" followed by a bunch of frustrating game breaking bugs that need to be patched the next day. Set a long skill queue of at least a week and forget about Eve for the day.

Seriously, take the NEXT day off work, you will appreciate it much more.

The only reason to login on expansion day is to make a profit on whatever item(s) became FoTM. In my experience flying (and fighting) on expansion day is exceptionally dumb but YMMV.

In terms of how long deployment takes - about 6 hours is average in the last few years. Its also fairly normal that the server will get at least one emergency restart to hotfix something important which the expansion broke.

Were I you I'd just go to work as normal, read the forums and enjoy the expansion day wailing Lol

^ this alt speaks the truth.

You don't know how broken Retribution will be on release. If we are lucky it's just T3s flying backwards and POSes shooting blues, if we are unlucky(*) CCP will release the new Crimewatch in a completely broken state and high-sec will either be Free For All or Total Concordokken Helldeath.

Also, this depends on how quick your internet connection is, for bigger expansions you may have to download several 100MB's of data (so if you're on a slow dialup "your" patchday could be much longer than others).

But server DT is typically 4-6 hours, and when something does not go according to plan 12. Hope you will enjoy your first expansion, personally I've seen all kinds from the last 18 Smile

Hope you get a great day even if you take it off work - the forum I'm sure will have lots of fireworks too!
