I really want to get into Eve, but I read so much in the forums to get a sense of the community and it just seems like everybody is so knowledgeable that there's really no place for those of us new to the game. In addition, it also seems like most of those oh-so-experienced capsuleers are also quite hostile. Ugh

I've jumped into the game and played a little off and on for a while, but I think this concern has always kept me from playing long-term.

So my question is--and be honest--is it even worth it for new people to try and join this community? Question I don't want to invest my time and money in this if it's too late to even hope to be a real player.

It's very much worth it. It won't take you more than a few months of training to be either useful to a corp or be able to start doing some genuinely satisfactory things solo (i.e. get a sense of achievement).

The EVE community is a great community - it looks hostile to the outside, but most people are pussycats in-game really, they just love pew-pew and will mercilessly hunt you down and kill you in the game, but they're usually great fun to chat with.

There are real douches, of course, but in my experience they're mostly douchey kiddie newbies in the central areas of Empire space. When you get out and about a bit, to low-sec and null, most experienced EVE players are actually farily friendly, provided you're on the right "side", and/or show that you're not a douche yourself.

This is game in which it's possible and popular to play a bad person, but that doesn't mean the players are actually bad people.

Just don't trust any of them, and you'll be ok :D

I used to do the same thing. I would play EVE for a month, maybe two at the most, then never touch it again for another 1-2 years. And yes EVE does have one of the most hostile communities I've seen in an MMO. Its not totally hostile, but the majority of it is. As far as the knowledgable part, you'll learn everything you'll need to have a chance with-in 3-5 weeks (I mean referring to the lingo, how to fit a ship, where to go and where to avoid, stuff like that).

When its all said and done, if the game itself has peaked your interest I'd encourage you to give it a try. Spend a month or two on it to be fair. Start out doing the tutorials (most games you can skip those, but in EVE I highly recommend them), then run some missions/mine/start crafting. If after 2 months you have no enjoyment, then EVE may not be for you. If nothing else grab a 21-day trial, make a Minimatar pilot. In 6-7 days you can be fit into a decent little frigate pirate/pvp ship. You'll have T2 guns, and the basic skills to tackle and stay alive long enough to earn the kill or learn from a loss.

For what its worth, I played for 3-4 weeks back in 2010 on this account. I hated it and quit playing. I tried it again about 6-8 weeks ago and I have been having a blast this time around. Its all about finding that one thing in EVE that interests you.
