Hey fellas,

Im a new player, just over 1m skill points, and am wondering about the skill changes, its primarily to destroyers and battlecruisers right? Well before retribution im gonna have alot of free time before hand (travelling) so i was wondering if its worth training up racial frigs and cruisers for battlecruisers/ destroyers for the races i want, so it wont be such a grind later on. For the races that i want, think just amarr an minmatar atm. Sorry for the grammer, its late and ive been doing maths coursework all day haha.

Skill points are not so important. If you are only 1m sp you will not catch up now to a point where it will help you and at any rate, focussing on core skills will help you out far more in the short-medium term anyway.

I agree with this. for a 1 million SP player, worrying about long-term SP optimization is silly. Much more useful to focus on immediately useful skillz, such as ship hull skillz, support skillz, and weapon skillz.

if you have the patience to sink ~2-3 months into skills that you will need a year down the road (if at all), then do so. if you are more interested in being effective as soon as possible, keep training core skills (tanking, cpacitor, gunnery/missiles, drones).

The battlecruiser and destroyer skill changes are NOT IN RETRIBUTION. This has been confirmed both via forum posts and devblogs.

They're coming soon™ but not in this next patch. Many people are guessing spring, but nobody knows for sure.

That said, they're good skills to have anyway. If you're that new, don't make them an immediate priority, but keep them in mind. Personally, I'd say BC is more important.

I'm a new player too and for me, to get to BC III takes about 11 days with all Racial Frigates and Cruisers trained to the appropiate level. So it is not that much time and i guess it is worth training.
However, i was wondering, if i don't train Destroyer to 4 before the change is happening, will i have Racial Destroyer 4 for all races after the changes happen automatically due to their change in requirements for Cruisers (needing Racial Destroyer 4 instead of Racial Frigate 4)?

Destroyers 4 and racial frigates to 3 is pretty much a no brainer even for a new player, especially with the new destroyers being added and the existing ones being buffed.

For the OP, it wouldn't be a terrible idea to get Battlecruisers 4 & racial cruisers to 3. The investment is small and it will make cross training quite a bit easier later on.

I had to go back and train destroyers. This is my first character, and I only trained destroyer to 1. I got a lucky drop worth about 3M isk, which helped me into my first cruiser.

:edit: instead of another t1 destroyer, perhaps a t2 destroyer would be better. Something that would be good at killing a class of ships, perhaps a destroyer with a fast lock, bonuses to tracking/missile velocity, so it would do well vs inteceptors and drones/fighters.

Interdictors are exactly like that. It's just their interdiction role that makes people overlook their bonuses to tracking or missile explosion velocity and whatnot.

Inties already have a pretty short battlefield lifespan

if you take the time to go for BC4, you might as well bite the bullet and train BC5. if you are a combat pilot, you will want to fly battlecruisers at some point and if you don't train it now, you probably will train only one or two of the racial versions later on, which will restrict your choices.

So as a new player sub 2 million SP what is recommended? looking at like 2 months of training to get Destroyers to 5 and BC to 5 neither of which i currently fly.

Do we think that its even possible to get them before they are implemented?

For a new pilot, a good comprimise would be to get all frigs to 4, cruisers to 3, BC and destroyers to 4. Gets you all 4 races of BC and destroyers with the skills at 4, and only takes ~20 days.

this. if you have the patience to wait another ~25 days, you can go for BC5. it will save you 60 days of training time down the road but it also means another month flying whatever it is you are flying now with the same mediocre support skills you have now.

If you aren't interested in getting it to 5 before the change (and you could very well decide not to as for the time being you won't gain much from it) there is not much of a point to getting it to 3-4 now. Down the road the 2 day train from 3-4 is nothing, 2 day trains are short ones by the time you want to start crosstraining all races.

The real benefit of training them now is getting bc and dessie 5 now as that will save you some 4 months of training down the road when you do want to crosstrain everything. That is how-ever a very long way off at 1-2 mil SP and you won't be able to use those skills effectively for a while.
