I've decided to get a bit in to missions as i'm running dead in the 0.0 blobfights and gatecamps.
i'm planning on using a Navythron but everyone seems to use rails for the job.

is it viable to use blasters for L4's? as i'm not very fond of railguns.

Blasters work fine. It'll just take you longer to complete the missions because you have to fly to the targets.

problems with rats like gurista and serpents is that at the time you'll get to one of them other BS wil spread out and their optimals, so you'll have alot of burning. rails or navy potato

Rohk is about the only viable blaster ship for missions. You can get a range of 25+28km with null and a few tracking enhancers/tracking computers, doing 716dps with 3 magstabs. This allows you to actually hit targets that like to orbit at 50km, and murder targets that like to get closer than that. Perhaps surprisingly, the best rat to send the rohk against is angels, cause they all like getting close.

With using a ship other than a rohk, you are going to find yourself with range issues, and wasting time burning into range, with many of the targets fleeing far away. In that case, the best ship to use would actually be the kronos, because it gets a tanking bonus to actually survive doing this, while still putting out the dps necessary to actually complete the mission. I still wouldn't recommend it as a ship for all missions though.

All this being said, using a blaster ship for certain missions, like damsel, duo of death, or other missions with lots of shortrange ships blasters are perfectly viable - but it is much more a mission by mission basis.

Aside from rohk you will need some perversions and T2 ammo for targets outside 30 km radius which is feasible on non bonused ships with antimatter. Or perma MWD if youre mazohist as well.
But generally it is entirely possible to use short tanged weapons in mission.

You'll save yourself alot of time and frustration if you just use rails, however there is no reason to keep a rack of blasters spare for certain missions where rats spawn right on top of you, you'll get far more mileage. I almost always carry a spare rack of short range guns on my mission boats as some in some missions close range weapons are far better and because they generally use lower fitting (missiles excluded), it's as easy as swapping the highs while maintaining the rest of the fit.

Actually a Blaster Proteus is quite an awesome ship. Around 800 DPS with 5 hammerheads against serpentis your looking at 600 DPS Tank....

read what was written above. You won't be doing that much dps constantly, because most of the time you'll have to burn to your target.

No need :P With a MWD not much time is lost at all. Plus its "fun" doing it that way. Who really cares about a few seconds worth of travel time for fun factor?

Theres too much emphasis today on smashing through missions - grinding as fast as possible...It ruins the games fun.

The Proteus is such a great fun ship to fly.

As far as short range weapons are concerned, autocannons still kinda shine with the 4 dmg types available.
However, blasters sound like a lot of fun against Angels.

blasters also work quite well vs mercenaries, in a lot of missions. In Damsel, for example, they're hilariously powerful vs the squishy battleships.

I bought a vindicator to use with blasters, and I can say that in Damsel in Distress, it really shines. You kill stuff so fast...

A shield-tanked blaster Kronos does most missions faster than a Vargur, but it can't tank Sansha/Blood so you'd have to switch to armor tank for those.
