Different ship types

Hi all,

What type of ships do you recommend and how would you fit them?
With 'type' I mean the purpose of the ship.

For example: (remember I'm new)
- a mining ship (In my case a Caldari Bantam)
- a scanning ship (in my case a Caldari Heron)

How would you fit those ships?
Do you recommend one big attack ship (Cormorant in my case) or also smaller ones (like Condor and Merlin)?
Or would you say: 'You won't use the small ones'

I'm in my trial period and haven't really chosen a special type of player, because I am still trying everything!

Thanks,

Braden

Keep trying everything. Eve is so wide open that it is hard to peg down just one or two things to do. Once you have an idea start to specialize but dont be afraid to change tracks if you get bored or find something else you like better. Eve is cool that way, you don't need to pick one style of play. As for you question about ships/fitting tgats a much larger answer than you might be willing to go through. There are a dozen of each "type" of ship and you can fit them to be totally different than what they are intended to do (albeit less effective). One good example is the bait/battle mining barge for setting traps in belts. This is a question that most noobs (no offense intended) ask and usually get a vague, meaningless answer to. Since the possibilities are so wide open you need to be specific...something like "I'm looking for a close range active armor frigate fit for sansha ded sites in high sec"

Welcome to Eve and good luck

The way i think of it is each ship is Tool. Sure you can use a screwdriver to pry something up but a crow bar is gonna do a much better job at it. Yes you can fit a battleship with small guns and go out and try and kill frigates, but probably should just get a destroyer.

The right tool for the right job. I have really only done small gang PVP, and am really new but every ship has a relationship with every other ship role. Take your typical Tackle frigate its like the nail, you still need something bigger to be the hammer and make your tackle count.

I did my first level 1 missions in a Mining Bantam fit with a single Hobgoblin I for damage Shocked Later I came to my senses and started using a Kestrel.

Heron: Core or Expanded Probe Launcher, Improved or Prototype Cloaking Device, 2x Gravity Capacitor I rigs, 1MN Afterburner or 1MN MWD. Everything else is to taste (example: Survey Scanner or Ship Scanner)

A Bantam is okay for mining in 0.7 to 1.0 security systems. Below that, the NPC can get a little rough.

Okay so the developers are mixing things up a bit with ship roles and such but most of them as far as frigates are covered aren't changing too much or have already been changed.

Combat ship -
[Merlin / Kestrel / Moa] -
This is a ship made to be on the front lines, balanced with heavy tank and firepower but tends to be lacking in maneuverability and speed.

Attack ship -
[Condor / Caracal] -
This kind of ship is made to be fighting along side the combat ships, they trade tank for speed and maneuverability and are thus better for a skirmishing kind of role. Still heavy in damage though.

Support ships -
[Bantam / Griffin / Heron / Blackbird / Osprey] -
This category is a combination of a few different roles. These are mainly logistics and electronic warfare. This winter the Bantam will lose all mining bonuses and instead have bonuses to use shield transfers instead (The Dasher is a new ORE frigate coming in as a replacement). In other words logistics is essentially the "healers". The Griffin is the ewar ship with a bonus to ECM. each race has it's own ewar specialty. Caldari has ECM, Gallente has Sensor dampening, Amarr have tracking disruption and the Minmatar have target painters. The Heron is simply a scanning ship. Sometimes useful in combat for scanning down enemies that are hiding in remote locations. This winter it well be getting bonuses for using the special modules like code breakers, analyzers and salvagers for the sites you can scan down.

Industrial Ships -
[Badger / Dasher / Procurer] -
These are the miners and haulers. In the case of ships like the badger intended to be just cargo ships.

Small ships can be good. In a Kestrel you can fly as wingman for a more skilled mission runner. You fly your Kestrel and your job is to take care of the small pirate NPC ships (rats), the frigate-sized ones. They're dangerous, use various kinds of electronic warfare, maybe even scrambling.

Meanwhile, the older and more skilled player is flying a larger ship, a cruiser, battlecruiser or even battleship, fitted with large weapons that dish out a lot of damage but can't hit frigate-sized targets very well. That's why you come in handy.
