Skill Point "Hard Reset"

Will try to keep this as short as possible. Ok so, lets begin.

I have this idea in my head for quite some time and have been thinking about it alot. What would happen to EVE universe if we had a "premium" feature called for example "Hard Reset" . That feature would allow you to once a year reset you character skill points but at the cost .

Keep in mind that this is just an example. Let's say that it cost like 2-4 PLEXes and 10-15 % of your total skill points to do it . That 10-15% of your total skill point would be lost permanently .

This would maybe bring some older player's back into the game and make the game more accessible to new players who made some mistakes in their first few months maybe even convince them not to quit the game.

Lets be realistic here higher player base is good for both CCP and player community so its in our best interested to keep the old and attract new players. If you have some ideas how to make this work by all means please post it below and tell me what you think about this. Is it even possible to make something like this work ?

The problem this would create is the fact that it would negate the consequences of a bad decision in the beginning.

Can't support.

Hey there.

No.

Skill redistribution is not for Eve, regardless of "penalties."

Unless the penalty is you go back to having say....500sp. Then I'd be okay with it.

First of all, there's the question of why it's needed.
What problem does this solve?

I can start by saying that It will not help new players — it will in fact only serve to screw them over since they would forever be inevitably and unavoidably behind older ones. One of the immense benefits the EVE skill system does is that it allows a younger player to specialised in a particular area and thereby become more than a match for an older player. Your suggestion removes that possibility.

You turn characters into piles of SP, not a collection of (hopefully) carefully selected skill levels that create a total composition of abilities. In the former case, more is better — no if:s or but:s — since you can reassign them to match whatever is the hottest thing to do at the moment (ok, so only once a year — still close enough to “a moment” in EVE terms to count). In the latter case, that composition will have weak spots and strong areas, dips and mounds, and any time you spend filling in a dip means that someone else is given time to build a bigger mound than yours. Allowing you to redistribute that at will removes that calculation and the opportunity cost of the choices you have to make.

So that's just for starters and to address the “help the newbies” argument. I'll just post my standard list of game-breaking problems that I always post when this idea comes up:

It removes the point of having skills to begin with.
It removes the point of having attributes.
It removes attribute implants from the game.
It removes variety and instead encourages FOTM and cookie-cutter setups.
It removes the uniqueness, history and "character" of your character.
It removes planning and choice and consequences.
It removes goal-setting, progression and any achievement in those areas.
It kills character trading.
It massively boosts older characters over new ones.
It introduces "catching up" as a concept in EVE and instantly makes it impossible to do.

Setting aside everything else Tippia said, which is also very good, this is the most important point in my mind. There's no inherent problem with the skill system that a "reset" or a "redistribution" would solve. All of these proposals come down to one of two things: I want a get out of jail free card for my bad choices or I want to rapidly change my characters area of expertise (industry, PvP, market, whatever) based on what's hot at the moment.

Neither of those reasons are in keeping with the spirit of Eve. We've finally gotten CCP to get back in tune with that spirit. let's not screw it up now.

De'Veldrin's Corollary (to Malcanis' Law): Any idea that seeks to limit the ability of a large nullsec bloc to do something in the name of allowing more small groups into sov null will inevitably make it that much harder for small groups to enter sov null.

No,

sorry dude. But this is apart of eve, risk and loss. If you remove consequences, then everything loses its value.
