When to Establish POCOs

My corp was looking to establish some POCOs. How do you know which planets are worth establishing a POCO on and which aren't? And even if some planets aren't as proftiable as others, Is there a penalty or a reason NOT to have a Poco on such a planet even though there is little to no maintenance for them?

And yes, I am aware that some POCOs may have to be defended so I should be prepared for that eventuality.

The first planets you should be placing them on are the smallest temperate and barren planets you can find. These are the most popular for factory planets as they are the only planets that can have high end factories, and the smaller they are the shorter the minimum link.

Since P3 and P4 have the heaviest tax having a POCO on a planet that you and your corp use for a factory planet will save you the most isk. This will also be a popular spot for tenants if you set a lower tax rate. With a low enough tax nobody will bother bashing it as it saves everyone using it isk. And you will make more isk by having a low tax high traffic planet than you will having low traffic at a higher tax rate. The biggest benefit of factory planets is the amount of available resources for extraction is irrelevant. You could have 50 players or more using that same planet and everyone will still get 100% efficiency.

Placing POCO's on anything other than factory planets will be driven by your personal/corp needs. Extraction planets you and your corp actually use. You will not want low tax here for non friendlies as the more players using that planet quicker resources will be depleted. set corp tax at 0-2% to benefit from having low or no tax on your raw products. These planets are a little harder to hold, as you should have tax at 20% or higher for non blues to keep the number of players using the planet to a minimum. Any non friendlies wanting to use this planet would be considering taking out your POCO.
