Stuff from a finished contract is put back into a character's item hanger in the station the contract originated in.

If it was a corporate contract the stuff is put in the market deliveries hanger in the station.

Weird. File a Petition to see what CCP says.

What type of contract was it and was it finished or failed?

If it was a courier contract and it was failed, you do not get your stuff back. You get the collateral you set instead.

Deleted contracts will always drop your stuff in the hangar you created the contract from.

If it's an item exchange or auction contract and it's "Finished" that means you've sold the item. The buyer has it, and you have the ISK you asked for (or you bought the item and visa versa).

You have to look in the "Market Returns/Deliveries" tab in the inventory. Don't file a petition, your stuff will be there in the returns section in the station where you created the contract.
