Route planning & the map data

There are a lot of good sources of information on planning jumps for a ship like a Rhea or a Rorqual when you want to move across longer distances, and the maps in game, as well as sites like Dotlan, provide a wealth of info which can help you plan your route if you need to use a Prorator or similar ship, but I'm trying to find detail on one piece of data.

The "jumps per hour" factor can indicate how busy a system is, or has been (The graphs that are displayed on Dotlan are quite useful for seeing the overall traffic over a longer period).

What I'd like to know is what counts as a single jump?

If a system is on a pipe, and a person jumps in one side and out the other, is that counted as 2 jumps? Does this mean that systems along pipes can have their actual user traffic cut roughly in half if most people just travel through?

Also, when planning a jump route, are there any pitfalls that new pilots should be looking to avoid when choosing a waypoint between origin and destination?

Thanks.

as far as I know jumps counted are jumps into the system. That means jumping out will count as a jump for the next system.

afaik anybody coming through gates, wormholes, jump bridge, or jump drive is considered a jump.
