Why the difference in monthly fees depending on where you live?

Hello,

So far I am on a free account, but I just found out that if I choose continue playing I will have to pay more than other players simply because of where I live.

The monthly Pound Sterling and US dollar fees are about the same but the Euro fee is quite a bit higher. Is there a rational explantion for that?

I'm going to guess it has to deal with the exchange rate. Your best bet is to file a petition for the billing department and ask a Billing GM about this, it's not something we can really answer here in the forums.

This should help also, it's a developers blog about the price differences.

Thanks for the link although it doesn't quite adress my question. I don't use dollars, euros or pound sterling. In order to play I have to change some money. Since I live in Europe I have to change to Euro which at 15 euro/month is quite a bit more expensive than the other two correncies.

Think about it thsi way. The monthly fees in euros and dollars are both 15. But the euro is worth more than the dollar.

There is also a difference because the difference in levied taxes on different currency.

I say stop complaining.
You have to pay that much because you live ______
deal with it or don't pay, or move.
Gas costs 4,94 here but in a different state it costs 3.94
But I just don't whine about it.

The simple answer is local taxes, in the case of Europe it's probably VAT. As you live in Europe can you not change your local currency into £ sterling as opposed to €?

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

I am neither complaining nor whining. I am simply asking. I was hoping for a more mature answer.

In the real world yes, but CCP wants all European countries apart from the UK to pay using Euros (so they can make more money?). It picks that currency automatically.

Since it has no effect on gameplay or CCP where I live it is a bit difficult for me to understand.

Asking why there is such a difference in monthly fees is a legitimate question.

We Americans are an impoverished and fiercely capitalistic people. 15 euros could feed my entire village for a month, and still leave enough left over to fix up our chieftain's Escalade.

Actually, since I'm Swedish I have a similar issue.

If I pay directly to CCP I have to pay 15 Euro (due to taxes and joint legislation).

But I can buy GTC from the US (battleclinic, shattered crystal and others) and pay in USD, dodging the tax/VAT.

Technically I'm most likely breaking some laws (it's possible that I should pay VAT on the electronic service I bought from the US since it's actually performed within the EU/EEC area) but frankly I take a runner and hope that I'm not going to get an angry email from the taxman.

But really.

CCP are bound by law to pay VAT for services provided within the EEC framework.

Their solution is a bit heavy handed, but not really that unfair.

And if you don't like it, learn to overcome it.

CCP Greyscale: As to starbases, we agree it's pretty terrible, but we don't want to delay the entire release just for this one factor.

Exchange rates. The Euro isn't performing very well (frankly, it was never going to).

I see your point regarding VAT, but the VAT is different in, say, Sweden, Germany and Portugal. Therefore having one rate would seem a bit strange.

The exchange rate changes for the Euro and the Pound Sterling are roughly the same compared to the US Dollar over the last five years, so that it not true.
