The lure of harvesting Alloyed Tritanium, Armor Plates, and Tripped Power Circuits. Lots and lots and lots of them.

I made my first bil using regional buy orders on low volume, high margin items. That, and some mission running.

Made the first bil with hauling PI from deep low sec in a badger. Running gate camps in a t1 indy fully rigged and modded for cargo space was... quite fun!

Only lost one ship load of goods in all the time.

made my first 5 bil in a few ways:

Grinding incursions
Pirating (i kid you not, my first ransom i received was 750mil from an orca in lowsec- I still regret letting him go)
PI

I currently have almost nothing in liquid isk- but i have 8 bil in market orders- which is great for me because

-it keeps my pvp funded
-Orders require updating perhaps 1 or 2 times a day
- My current levels of isk works for me- which means I don't need to grind anymore for sec or isk.

I agree that the statement is true- that you need isk to make isk - i personally only ever bought 2 plex for isk ( which i know is kinda cheating) but if you know how to make that isk work for you then i say go ahead and get the headstart you need.

I'm with Brick on this one- make thouse carebearing b******s squeal..

I made my first billions mining for my corp, while others with better skills gun-mined the drones for shiny alloys. Unfortunately, we were communist, so all proceeds went into the wallet. Lol It wasn't a big deal, because I was contributing enough to the pot that I never had requests for shiny things turned down.

After that gig I made more billions in the hisec mining gig. Boring, but at the time it worked.

After that I moved back to 0.0 and mined mercoxit mercilessly, making many more billions.

It was at that point that I was able to buy into some moon reaction chains, which made enough that I really didn't need to mine unless I was bored. Add into that planetary interaction, and making POS fuels on 0.0 planets, and I was doing well.

Now I'm back in hisec due to Real Life, and making occasional billions on hisec ores or ice if I need to AFK.

Before the NPC loot nerf I would buy Meta 0 Loot in off hub mission systems and reprocess it for profit. Generally got 20% ROI. Now that the NPCs no longer drop Meta O loot, its not a profitable and the ROI is way down :(

Now I'm into WHs.. :)

I made my first billion mining kernite back in late '06 /early '07 On the advice of a friend who convinced me hauling it to mission hubs would make a tidy profit.

This was back when hulks were 500mil so I mined it in an Armageddon full of cargo expander 2s and miner 2s.

Not an experience I wish to repeat.

May 2009, I found out fleet PvPing does not make rich. With all of 50M on my name, I slapped an alt in Amarr and flipped stupid stuff like laser crystals M, T2 100MN AB and similar. One month later I dinged my first billion!

On my original toon ( Before dropping the game for a year or so), it was when WHS first came out along with the probe launchers and probes..

For the first few days after the expansion came out Probe launchers were being sold at up to 1million each dropping to around 250k after a few days, then down to normal prices... considering they only cost around 10k to make... it was evil.. :-)

Oddly big losses are easier to remember than the big wins.

Missions + Covert Ops cloak arbitrage (pre invention days) for the initial ISK

After that S+I, patch speculation insurance fraud, contract trading were/are the big winners. Also an honourable mention for the day they removed shuttles as NPC items - not huge ISK amounts (although great ROI) but a manic and fun few hours.

First billion was running a courier service for low-volume-high-value goods for my corp, took a 10 to 15% cut of the Jita price for myself.

The first 5b came through station trading which I started because of the low scalability and somewhat high risk of the courier service.

Same here but then regional so average profits where around 50 to 70 %.Expanded to 4 regions witha minimum of 300 orders each region , then i went slightly insane ....
