Hi, I started Eve a few days ago and am doing the exploring tutorial. Part of the tutorial was to find a Gravametric training site. I watched the video tutorial but could only find other sites and I needed a "proof of Discovery" certificate to move on. I asked on The Rookie channel and no one seemed to want to help or did not know. Is anyone familiar with the tutorial? It was easy to find the other sites just cannot find this one. I put out 5 probes and one time got to 99.99 signal strength on a Grav site, I am not sure though if it was a training site, at any rate I could not get to 100%---HELP

You're going to hate me for saying it but where scanning is concerned practice makes perfect.

You're working in 3 dimensional space with a 2 dimensional interface, getting your head round it can be trying to say the least. You can rotate and zoom the scanning screen to get an idea of where your probes actually are in relation to what you're looking for. When I first tried it all the probes looked to be in the right area, until I rotated and found that 2 of them were halfway across the universe from where I thought they were.

Did you shrink the probes scanning radius to their lowest possible setting? (should be 0.25au)

Are your probes actually where you think they are? (see 2nd paragraph)

Also I suggest reading this thread, the OP was at it 5 hours, there's some good advice in there.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

At the top of this window is the menu of EVE's forum. Click on "EVELOPEDIA" and you'll have a full encyclopedia about EVE (there are others too).
There i have found that by entering "probing" in the search field :

Thank you for your help, I looked at what you were saying than I watched the Eve U tutorial on scanning (much better than the other tutorial) and realized it was in 3d and I had to rotate the camera and put probes on top and on bottom as well as right , left etc

I did get it scanned down and I completed the exploration tutorial and am now working on the advanced Military, once I got the hang of it, it was easy. I also increase my astrometrics to 3 to get more probes

The Eve U video was only about 13 min, and it explained basic scanning really well

There are several great scanning videos out there. The tutorial was very easy, but when I tried to go out and scan on my own, it was quite frustrating. I have since improved my skills and my equipment. I look forward to moving into lo-sec next week.

I would watch a lot of different vids. You can get a different scan style form different people and find what works best for you.

This guy has been my recent goto for insight.

I am currently running two accounts, as the second was (and is) just a "buyer / hauler" for my trader alt. However, after watching that, I think I'll be bringing her alone for clean up...or maybe let her scan down and stay cloaked-stationary as I move in for de-ratting and then bring her in.

The power of two. The possibilities are endless.

Then again...that's two lost ships if it hits the fan...

Ha! No kiddin'. That second account was created on day 14. I HAD to do it. I needed ISK for ships and skills. I needed a second account for ISK. Hell, I just bought 11 Vexors and I can't even fly one yet....What?

This is scanning related. So, I'll drop my Q here, in lieu of starting another thread.

I finally scanned down my first site after leaving the tutorials over 2 weeks ago. Well, the first site out of ten that wasn't an..."Unknown". I got my character where he can actually do something. However, the Mag site was listed as something like..."Looted Serp Wrecks" I thought that by being named Looted, meant that someone already hit the site.

I went in anyway and made out with 15 items from three of the five wrecks. Two were empty and the loot only totaled to about 6k.

Was the site name accurate in warning?
Had someone potentially been there and just left the junk?

The site name doesn't take into account that someone may have already been there, they're fixed names in the DB.

If the wrecks were yellow or blue then yep someone had already been through the site, killed the NPCs and looted the good stuff, if they were white then it's just the way the site is generated.

Keep in mind that everything lists as "Unknown" until you get your scan lock to a certain percentage (I think around 40-50%). If it's still Unknown when you're up to about 75% then yeah, it's probably a combat site.

Oh my...If that's the case, I'm afraid I might have been passing up good sites.

If I scanned it down to read "unknown", I assumed all of those were WHs or Combat. All of the unknowns I have scanned down (12 or so) have all been WHs / Combat.

I see everything listing as...well, nothing until I get it down to around 50%. Then it will list as a specific site or unknown.Question

I'm getting my Alt Scanner ready and I noticed she had a set of Sister Combat Probes, in her inventory. I forgot about having them, as I bough them in a package deal, so they are basically free.

I have been looking into what they do and can do but I am finding some...less than straight answers. I mean, the EVElopedia has the descriptions well documented with....

Quote:
Scan Probes

Without scan probes there could be no probing. There are three kinds of scan probes used in scanning:

Core Scanner Probe I can only be used to find Cosmic Anomalies and Cosmic Signatures, which are the primary interest to exploration. Core scanner probes cover the scan range from 0.25 to 32 AU and are the most useful probes used in finding exploration sites.

Combat Scanner Probe I is used to scan cosmic anomalies, cosmic signatures as well as player ships, structures and drones, they however require the CPU-intensive (220tf) Expanded Probe Launcher I to launch. Combat scanner probes cover scan range from 0.5 to 64 AU.

Deep Space Scanner Probe I is an enhanced combat scanner probe which allows one to cover up from 2 to 256 AU scan range. It should be noted that the probe itself requires Astrometrics V to use.

But what about the viable use?

Does one just need to use Combat Probes?

Is the extra 0.25 scan range THAT much more helpful in getting 100%?

The wiki article is a bit misleading there.

Firstly, anomalies are not "signatures". Anomalies can be found using no probes at all - just using the system scanner every ship has built in.

Using a combat probe will only show these anomalies because like using a core probe to find signatures, you essentially get them for free (100% scanned down in one pass).

Combat probes are only used for finding other people's ships, or structures or drones etc.

If you are after sites to run, rather than just ninja salvaging, you only really need core probes. That said, if you are finding a site impossible to lock down with your current skills, there is the chance someone else is currently in that site, and you could combat scan down their ass, so you find out where the site is :P

Exploration is Random. Random is Random... or is it?! http://docs.python.org/2/library/random.html
