Inventory items not stacking?

New player and not on top of the forums. Did a search and found some challenges regarding new inventory system?

Not sure if it is new pre or post my signing up.

My challenge = Why will inventory items not stack? For example, I purchase 8 x 150mm Prot Gaussers and fit a couple. If I unfit them, they no longer stack with the unused stack or with each other. So I have three individual Local Power Plants, maybe a bazillion 125mm, 75mm Prot Gaussers, etc. None of which stack. Why?

There are better things that don't exist!

If you move them to the hanger and repackage them you will be able to stack them again.Just one of Eves idiosyncrasies. What?

Don't repackage ships or you'll lose rigs if there are any.
Don't repackage containers with items or you'll have to put them back in.

And be careful not to reprocess as the they are close in the right click menu. Even though you still have to click ok on the next reprocess quote, but still.

"Unpackaged" or "assembled" modules and ships do not stack because they gain individuality of sorts when they are assembled. That is, a particular module or ship could have indvidual properties, like damage, usage (laser crystals), contents/fittings (ships and containers), etc. In some cases, these are also larger than the packaged version.

When a module gets packaged, it loses all of those, possibly a bit of volume, and becomes stackable. The way you know if something is packaged or not is by whether it has a stack counter on it.

Ed: Also yes, this needs moving into the New Player Q&A.

That's a roundabout way of saying that packaged items have a generic item ID and unpacked items have a unique ID.

They do, but that is gibberish to someone who is unfamiliar to how items and their IDs work in RPGs or in programming in general.

Every item in EVE has a volume. Everything takes up space. Items take up less space when they are packaged. Think about it like this: you buy something that required assembly at the store. It comes in a box with instructions. It takes up much less space packaged neatly in that box. Once you assemble, it takes up much more space.

In order to tell if an item is packed or un-packed, just look at the icon for it in your inventory. If there is a little number in the bottom right corner, then it is packaged. It there is no # in the bottom right corner, the item is assembled. Assembled items can not be stacked on each other.

FC, what do?

Thanks for all the great replies. I might have thought of this for many items, but much less likely for some others. Seems odd that there is no EVE help on this...

CCP would do well to add these things as they pop up from new players. When I work on supporting a new product and I get a 1st time inquiry from a user, that is what I do. I clearly and concisely add their question or ideas to a knowledge base or something. For my own use if not theirs.

It is often challenging to figure out if something like this is broken and one of those things people complain about and you are just not aware of that yet, or if there is actually a way to do it properly or successfully.

Thanks All!
