Are there are any alliance maps that are updated on a reasonably current basis? All the ones i see on Google are very old.

Here's a list of daily sovereignty maps going back 5 years or so.

Explore there. I dont know if Dotlan offers a "3d" version of the maps but the info you seek is probably there.

And its constantly updated.

Thank you all for those useful links.

I do have on other question. I remember under the old forums, there was one forum where alliances used to engage in "diplomacy" and talk about their daily shenanigans. As I've just returned after a long absence, I don't see a comparable forum on the new site. Where does one go for alliance news nowadays?

CAOD? still exists here although I think posting access is limited to corps with more than 10 members

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

It's when you watch one of the vids that people have made, X months Sov over y seconds
that you realise most of the time, nothing ever changes out there

Then you read thier posts about how vibrant, rich & risk laden thier life in nulsec is, and
you again realise, they are just full of **** and most likely running incursions in hisec.

That is an artifact of how the sovereignty system and the map display works. In most cases, the really big and important fights happen in the beginning of a war over several key systems. Timers flip back and forth as fights are won and lost. Even when these key systems fall, it is not enough for the map to show anything, as the defender still owns the mostly empty systems around. Only when all is said and done comes the mop-up, when the attacker quickly flips over sov in the remaining systems, and the region suddenly changes hands. But this is almost always preceded by weeks or even months of warfare that can't be seen on the influence map.

And, obviously, when the defender wins, you will not see any change on the map at all.
