Can someone give me the rundown of faction warfare?

You'd think there would be a sticky on this topic!

So I understand the basic basics, something about I can shoot other people in faction warfare and certain NPCs. But I'd like some more specific info:

1.) How do I know if I'm in a militia?
2.) Who exactly can I shoot, and where will I find them?
3.) How likely am I to meet players in an opposing militia, based on various regions of space?

And anything else would be nice too! I figured this would be easier to understand once I got into it but I'm finding it thoroughly confusing. I thought I got into an Amarr militia a few months ago, but then nothing happened. I was starting to suspect that I wasn't actually in a militia. Then just recently, after spending a few days in Minmatar space, suddenly Minmatar NPCs fired at me when they hadn't before. (I have high Minmatar standings) So I'm kinda confused on this whole thing.

You're overcomplicating this quite a bit.

1) Join Minmatar militia with an alt
2) Run FW missions for even more LP than orbiting butan
3) ????
4) Profit

If you want PVP, just find a pirate corp with good numbers in your TZ and join them for twice the targets as you would gain joining FW.

I'm not here for profit, I'm here for understanding, of which I have none. You all can be happy having a minimum understanding of the game you play, but I'd like to go above and beyond and know how everything works. That's just me. And I know I'm not alone, so where's all the info about FW?

You'll have a chatbox titled "Militia" and you will be in one of the NPC militia corps.

Reaver Glitterstim wrote:

If you join Amarr or Caldari militias, you can shoot anyone in Gallente and Minmitar militia. The same holds true in reverse.

As far as where the "fun" happens... it's all in low-sec. Sesiedie, Auga, Kourmonen, and Kamela are all the "focal points" for the war between the Amarr and Minmitar... though, it can often branch out in the system loops outside of those places.
Not sure where the "focal points" are between Gallente and Caldari.

Reaver Glitterstim wrote:

Various regions and timezones.
Generally speaking... the closer you are to the "focal points" the more likely you are to run into enemies and friendlies alike. Be warned though that the risk for organized gangs also increases the closer you are to said areas.
If solo stuff is more to your liking then hang around more backwater systems and regions (ex. Metropolis). You may not find many targets or allies out there... but the chances for large groups of enemies is also significantly lower.

With respect to timezones... EU evening hours and late US evening/early NZ hours are the "prime times" for the Minmitar Militia.
US late afternoon to early evening and Australia midday to evening times are the "prime times" for the Amarr miltia.
(note: this is not entirely accurate information as "prime times" shift around quite a bit and/or are not set in stone).

Reaver Glitterstim wrote:

Much of the "old rules" from before the FW "revamp" still apply.

- If I join and start shooting people, will I lose standing with whatever faction their militia belongs to or just the militia corp?
You will lose standings with the opposing Militia corp which will somewhat affect the overall standings you have with the overall enemy faction... but it is largely negligible.
However, serious standings "damage" will occur if you make it a habit of firing on and destroying the enemy NPCs.

- Can my character leave the militia and safely enter a former enemy's high sec area?
So long as your standings with the faction are above -5.0 with that faction you shouldn't have an issue.

- Things to know about FW...

1. Set up your overview. Make it so that "friendlies" do not show up (helps prevent friendly fire incidents and reduces clutter) and make sure that militia status supersedes outlaw/GCC status (quite a few militia members are "pirates" and attacking them will incur a large penalty on your standings with the militia).
2. Buy ships and mods in bulk and have PvP ships of ALL types (ex, shield-fit, armor-fit, DPS/gank-fit, nano-fit, etc) prefit in an easy to access station (preferably a low-sec one that many other militia members use).
3. You will lose A LOT of ships in militia. Have a steady source of income to replace stuff.
4. Do NOT give away friendly fleet locations and/or friendly ship types in Militia Chat. The enemy has many spaiz!!!
5. Learn the area well. This will help you when you are looking for stuff to kill or escape from hostiles.
6. When looking for a fleet, type "X" into militia chat and eventually you will get picked up.
6i. Alternatively, go out and roam a bit. If you stumble upon a friendly fleet, they might pick you up. If not, keep looking (and try killing some stuff while you're at it).
7. Once you join a fleet, join audio (be it the in-game EvE audio or Vent, Teamspeak, etc) and LISTEN.
7i. LISTEN SOME MORE.
7ii. ARE YOU SURE YOU'RE LISTENING????
7iii. If you cannot figure out where the fleet is by listening, ask [politely] by typing in fleet.
8. The FC (fleet commander) is GOD himself and his orders should be followed to the letter (ex. even if you're in a frigate, SHOOT THE GODDAMN "PRIMARY" that has been called). He and his scouts should be the only ones talking. Do NOT talk unless spoken to.
9. Get to know the "regulars" within your timezone. Good things will follow if you make friends with them.
10. Listen to everyone's advice... no matter how abrasive it is. Chances are, they know what they are doing and you don't

Thanks.

Apparently I'm not in the militia. I wasn't sure why I got shot in highsec, but someone pointed out to me that my security status is lower than usual.

Still...this forum is practically sticky-free!

Once on coms its is a great idea to repeatedly ask lots of questions. This helps the FCs get in the habit of being more precise so it's win-win for everyone. Example:

FC "Welcome aboard M8!"

You: "Thanks where we at Sir?"

FC: "Holding on the gate, warp to me at zero"

You: "Which gate sir?"

FC "The Kedama gate, just warp to me at zero"

You: "Copy sir. Is that the Kedama gate here in Tama?"

FC: "For F#$%^^! Sake, do you see us here in local?!"

You: "Just making sure sir, communications are everything!"

FC: "OH $#&^! everyone off the--"

You: "I posted my fit in fleet, can you look at it and give me--"

FC: "--I am pointed! I need jams! Everyone align to--"

You: "Some feedback as I am new to this."

FC: "Thrasher is primary!!!"

You: "Wait! NO I AM THE THRASHER SIR!"

FC: "DPS on the THRASHER, get him off me!"

You: "NO NO I am in a Thrasher I wont come if you are gonna shoot me!"

FC: "I'm down, what the #%$^!"

You: "Ok I am warping to you at zero."

FC: "Someone call primaries"

You: "Sir, I thought you said you were on the gate. This is the sun. Where is everyone? Oh! A pod, that's very tricky of your sir!"

FC: "I hate you and I hate factions"

Good Sir;

Nobody ever tells you what you really need to click.

Click the militia box in your station. Join the militia.
Your side are the purple guys, their side are the orange (and red too).
Get a rifter with 2 warp stabalizers in the bottom area and 3 guns in the top area.
Click the militia box and look at the map thing.
Go to the nearest orange star-system.
Run the scanner.
Go to the Minor base (or whatever). Stay out a 100 km from the gate the first few times.
Once you are there they will come. The good thing is nobody can warp right in on top of you (unlike most everywhere else)
so If you think the fight is one-to-one it really is.
With warp stabalizers everyone is going to make fun of you, but you will mostly be able to warp away from trouble.
Find out which ships are fast, which are slow.

If you actually go to the gate and warp into the area you have a big +.
There won't be any big big ships, and no advanced ships, just frigates and destroyers. Nothing
really nasty can get through the jump gate. Stay away from the destroyers. Warp away from the frigates when you get low.

Kill a few NPCs from time to time.

You don't need 20 rifters to learn coward PvP, just a rifter with warp stabalizers.
When you are ready fit a rupture with 5 warp stabalizers.

Also, forget about all the "how do I make money" 100 US dollars buys you billions and billions of ISK. If you are going
to play the game just buy yourself the ISK and skip the tedium.

Most of that was information I didn't need and didn't ask for, but thanks anyway. It was interesting, and may come in handy one day.

Just curious: do gate guns open up on you in lowsec if you aggro an enemy militia pilot? I'd guess no, but I've never done FW and I'd like to know.

Also, what's the PVP type that happens in FW? Is it mostly small gang, or large fleet?

No to gate guns.

Pretty much every type of pvp happens from solo to plex fights to large fleets. Alot of people assume that joining FW will give you access to each type of fight but that isn't the case. It's really the corp and their style of play that determines the type of combat you have access to.

Its 80% farming, 14% smacktalk 6% pvp.

Pvp is 90% Dessi and down

If you like cheap isk thats getting nerfed, and small ship pvp its fun. If not do something else.

Don't ask about Italics, just tilt your head.

As a non FW pilot, but having observed them at work and/or tried to catch them, it seems to be all about alt characters in multi-stabbed, speed tanking frigs orbitting various sites. What?

If you're wanting to roam in a small gang, be prepared to have enemy militia members coming from far and wide to get on your cruiser killmail.
