After 9 Years in Cryo-stasis...

I've returned to check out the EVE universe. I was here in the very beginning but didn't stick around for various reasons. Now that I'm back, I have a few questions.

My gameplay tastes may have changed. I originally created a Minmatar pilot, but now have some interest in other races. Is it worthwhile to create a new character and just start over? Is it hard for a Minmatar to pilot say, a Gallente ship (I'm interested in the Drones now, never was before).

Also, it looks like I dithched my Cruiser I once had back then, but still have a Probe, no modules, and no real cash. Might actually be fun to figure out how to get back on my feet, so to speak, by clawing my way back with nickels and dimes, but what do you recommend when I only have 400isk available and not even a civ mining laser to my name? What's a freshly thawed old timer pilot to do? :)

Thanks for any feedback and suggestions.

Cheers!

I would not restart, but that is me, it is not like you can waste skills, you can trains any skill you want. Missions would be a quick way back to cash, you can do a cheap fit that will allow you to do at least level 1's. Find a corp that can help would be my advice, I know most corps will have loads of mods to use, weather they allow new people to use is another story.

I'm a nerd, you can check my stats!! Skilling Int/Mem at 45 sp per minute is how I mack!     I'm like a lapdog, all bark no bite.

Just take your probe through the tutorial and then the closest set of career agents. It might be a little tedious, but by the end of it you will have a set of usable combat modules and enough cash for a destroyer in about an hour or two. After that you can move on to the Sisters of Eve epic arc for another 2-3 hours and have enough to outfit a cruiser or two.

Career agents and their extravagant rewards make it easy to eke out a living from nothing these days. No sense in starting over with a different character when the old skill points on this one will only save you time and money later.

Keep your 2003 chracter! Race is purely cosmetic now.

I would start by buying a bottle of good booze, downloading the Industrial Sized Knowledge Base and get reading.

If you need to make some quick cash, get into faction warfare fast before they nerf it. You should be able to work up a few hundred million ISK quite quickly.

Keep the toon. Retraining is neither here nor there.

On the help menu is a Career Advisory button, click it and run through a tutorial set or two to regain a feel for the game
and get a small collection of free ships & ISK

After than Arnon is where you'll find the starting point for a 50 mission Epic Arc (sounds more impressive than it actually isCool), or Pop the Corp Search tool and see if theres something you like the sound of to apply to.

keep Minmatar character > do level 1 missions and build up to lvl2 - grind grind > get Rifter frigate > LOL madly

You can (and almost certainly will) crosstrain for other race's weapons / ships (such as drones) later. Your initial choice of race doesn't really limit you much.

If nothing else you could probably sell that 2003 character on the character bazaar for a pretty penny.

I suggest you petition CCP and get them to check into your employment history. It's not behaving.

Aside from that, keep the toon, but if you haven't played in 9 years, you may want to start over. My first thought if it was me, would be, does this toon have anything no longer available on it. Skills for example.

A lot of them are still there, on old characters, but no longer available to new players. Some cost Billions of ISK just for the skillbook, which is now more a collectible than a used item, even though I believe they still work.

I doubt you have many SP and investment in that toon, but it could be interesting nevertheless, and for some reason people bow to ancient toons even when they have no SP. You may want to sell it on the Character Bazaar. Quite possibly you'll get a few Billion for it.

This.

But don't spend money on ships until you've done all the career tutorials - they give you all the ships you need for immedaiate purposes, including a destroyer towards the end of the Advanced Military one.

What exactly would be the advantage to him of starting a new character?

Cleaning up the skill selection, choosing a solid direction, and no distractions. As he said, the toon is 9 years old and he hasn't played in 9 years. I would assume he tried it for a month and made a Corp, got bored of the lack of a skill queue, training skills haphazard, and such, and decided the game wasn't for him at the time.

That means he probably doesn't have more than 2 million SP anyway, so why not start a new toon and go from there. He'll also not have the issue of running into players who just assume he's been in some tax evasion Corp running missions for 9 years, or thinking he's a moron for being 9 years in and still not knowing the game. Preconceptions and such.

The forums don't account for a great many players, so aside from the few of us who spot this thread and post in it, everyone else is just going to see a 9 year character with no killboard. Someone learning the game doesn't really need that. Besides, he'll benefit personally from the knowledge he has of when he started and how the game was then. Nobody else needs to see it.

Just my thoughts. By no means absolute or dictated philosophy, but my own personal opinion I thought I'd share.

So no tangible advantage, just a "cleaner" skillsheet.

OK.

The only reasons to scrap your character for another would be that you don't like your race, bloodline or the name.

In other cases it might be its look which you could only change with some investment, but you just made that anew anyways.

You have no penalties for training and flying another races ships at all.

Since there are no character levels in EVE you can't have wrong skills that would affect your performance for the worse. You just start training the ones you need instead. Also chances are you'll need the so called wrong ones in the future anyways.
