Spoiler: when people say they afk mine in hisec, that means they are doing something else while a bot runs the miner for them.

Within a week of my Eve career starting I'd been approached and had joined a very friendly corp based in null sec. I spent my first few weeks in high sec learning the basics then was escorted to null sec where I've lived quite contentedly for the past 8 months. Besides logging an alt in Jita to check prices every now and again I have not left null for many months. If I want something hauled to high sec I contract it to our jump freighter guys, if I want something unavaiable on the market in null I sent our jump freighter guys a shopping list and a ten percent kicker and all is well. That is until about two days ago.

A good friend of mine from the real world finally realised that Diablo 3 is basically digital cancer; I saw an opportunity and he has now subscribed to internet spaceships. Being a good friend I have now relocated to a system on the fringes of high sec to teach him the ropes. This, I thought, would be a lovely opportunity to live out a week or two as a high sec carebear, mining the less valuable ores that our corp seems utterly incapable of locating for our capital production projects (as much as our CEO insists we can't, we're still trying to build stuff purely from megacyte).

So, the first hour of mining isn't so bad. Yes, the people in local seem to have an IQ deficit of probably 20 points on their counterparts in null sec, but it's not that bad. Hour two and I'm beginning to loose a little hope. Having read the forums I was missled into thinking that mining highsec was basically an AFK job, I put on Star Trek IV expecting to relax with Kirk and the gang on a whale finding adventure, but it was not to be. In Null sec the roids are big, really big. I've seen spodumain roids that would be palacial even for the space slug off star wars. But not in high sec, after only 2-3 cycles of strip mining its time to lock down another roid.

Im not writing this to promote the pilgrimage to nullsec (though to be honest I feel now that highsec is to null sec as ************ is to sex*), I'm not writing this post to shed tears or encourage anger, I'm just writing this post because it breaks the tedium of spending another hour in this bastion of boredom.

CCP really should enforce the rule that one needs to be at least 13 years old to play Eve.

This is that ISK per effort thing I keep mentioning. Or in your case, yield per effort.

High-sec roids suck. Protecting miners in high-sec isn't feasibly sustainable. Fly safe on your way back to null.

Lobotomy - removal of lobes. I don't even want to think of what labotomy might be but requiring it of hi sec miners certainly isn't going to encourage girls into the game.

I got my friend to play EVE and do her own thing in Empire for a about 3/4 weeks.

Then I dragged her to null, took her out in a fleet and got us all killed by a 40 man fleet.

I am the best friend ever.

I don't think so as per this sentence on OP: "Yes, the people in local seem to have an IQ deficit of probably 20 points on their counterparts in null sec, "

As you have seemingly just figured out, there are three types of highsec miners--AFK ice miners, botters, and the deranged.

Also, everyone knows what a "lobotomy" is. You are getting trolled over your repeated misspelling. I'm only bothering to explain this because your excellent taste in film has won you a few points in my book.

So it never crosses any ones mind that an afk(ish) miner might well be on an alt and missioning? I really find most peoples descriptions of miners mind blowingly moronic most of the time.

What kind of fleet were you in and what kind of fleet did you get exploded by?

The concept of multi tasking is beyond most people. I mean there is no way a high sec miner could have a screen setup with netflix, they also cannot play x-box, read a book, get yelled at by their wives for playing that stupid silly game. Nope when you are mining, you must always focus on the screen and not have speakers that blair out, the astroid is depleted.
