In my opinion the allocation of resources to the development of various playable planet types at launch would really increase the appeal of the game. Which when you look at the competition is probably desperately necessary. I'm sure most people, including the DUST devs, would agree that you can't really compete with established console FPS franchises in terms of pure gameplay or polish, so CCPs strategy seems to be to cater to a different audience with a noticeably different set of features (for example persistency.) That approach is fine in my book, although I don't think it is very likely to lead to a commercial (and let's face it, this is what CCP is actually after, and rightfully so) success.

So keeping in mind this we-offer-something-different mindset, I find it hard to understand why DUST should limit itself to such a generic and bland setting for the game like the "random temperate planet #274563". It's true enough, in order for DUST to have any chance at being a success, you need to offer something no one else does, like EVE itself did back in the day. So instead of offering levels and maps set in an environment that, sci-fi buildings and equipment aside, could just as well appear in any other current FPS, I think it would really pay off to bring the players to fresh, interesting places like a Gas Planet or Plasma Planet. Some of the previous posters already mentioned some great scenarios.

So tl;dr:

Why would a game that desperately needs to set itself apart from other FPSs only provide bland, generic level environments?

Jet packs and fighters and like i said they'd be hopping between infastructures as well, though it be cool if it was nothing but aircraft.

Yeah, that sounds like fun. Make it so jet packs need fuel, hydrogen, and they need to deploy a hydrogen fule maker gizmo. If you run out of gas, you die. Try to take out the enemy fule cans/production as you work your way to thier base, blah blah :)
