I'm starting this thread just for kicks, and to get an idea of how many new players are joining EVE.

If you're a new player, having started in the past 1 year, please post with your Main or a legitimate Alt.

What I'm looking for:

~ Start date.

~ Memorable experience. Keep it brief, but tell us something about an achievement or interesting event that you experienced or witnessed.

~ Thoughts on EVE. Again, briefly summarize your experience and thoughts.

~ Impression of the Forums. As above.

~ Training focus. What you plan to do in EVE, or have begun training for.

~ Something you don't like about EVE. Can be mechanics, social, or whatever.

If you know any new players in the game that don't visit the forums or this section of them, it would be nice if you directed them this way.

Thanks,

You do realize that this thread is just gonna be trolled to hell right?

It's quite possible, but maybe the other players will just wait and see what evolves. No idea.

Really not sure it's going to see any real activity, but I figured I'd post it anyway. Of course, I could wander through NP Q&A, and post this there, but I'm not a New Player, so probably not appropriate. I could also just look through the threads, but figured it would be more interesting this way.

Why, because it's a thread in General Discussion, or because it contradicts the super true fact that Eve is dying?

As someone who roams Q&A myself, I think this thread would be more appropriate there. If you want, report it yourself to have it moved by an ISD.

In the spirit of getting this started, I'll post (though at almost 3 years old, I'm not really a newbie).

~ Start date: December 2009, if I remember correctly.

~ Memorable experience: (1) "Story" post by me about 8-9 months in, while I was the hotshot Rifter tackler in all fleets: http://www.thewholefrigate.com/2010/09/suicide-tackling.html
(2) A bit later, I decided large fleet fights were bull, so I would just keep eyes in the surrounding systems to see any incoming fleets that wanted to interfere. I did this in a (then crappy) Slasher. While a big fleet fight was going on one time, I hunted down two bombers, helped a 3rd party gang kill an enemy Vagabond, then salvaged the wreck for about 100 mil profit. Best large fleet ever.

~ Thoughts on EVE: Definitely the best and deepest game I've ever played. The level of player interaction is amazing, the stuff to do is more than you could ever hope, and real skill pays off a lot more than in other games. It has ruined other MMOs for me.

~ Impression of the Forums: Depends on the section. Some are useful, some are not, but none of them are for the meek (other than perhaps Newbie Q&A).

~ Training focus: Straight up small-gang small-ship PvP. I can fly all T1/T2 frigates of all races with T2 equipment, plus a good chunk of cruisers.

~ Something you don't like about EVE: ECM. I will periodically drop by ECM threads on the forums whining about how terrible it is. It simply doesn't fit into Eve.

I will try to get some of the new players in my corp to post here. Cheers!

Thanks Petrus, ISD TYPE40

I suppose it wouldn't hurt me to keep up that spirit myself, though also well over a year old. Smile

~ Start date. Sometime before Sept. 2008, the start date of the oldest character I created that I can still track.

~ Memorable experience. Still has to be getting ganked in some Lowsec, while picking up a massive regional buy order. I was near the end of my route, and had a near full cargohold in my Drake at the time. Inexperienced in PvP, (Still am), and tired after what seemed like hours of system jumping.

I left the station there with two more pick-ups to go on my route, and 5 guys pop out of nowhere and proceed to lock down and tear apart my ship. I managed to spam warp and get out when I landed in my pod, and had a conversation with them as they convo'd me, that lasted for another 5 jumps. Interesting days.

~ Thoughts on EVE. I still like the game, and will continue subscribing and playing for years I imagine. I may not play all the time, or get right into it now, but things change and I know I'll be doing something active again here in time. For now, I train my two Characters and sit back and watch the forums and changes. Even discuss some of them, and ideas on other things to come, and those still in the 'what if' stage.

~ Impression of the Forums. Sometimes good. I like hanging out here more than anywhere else atm. Seems quiet now, but that isn't uncommon periodically. I really like to sit back and wait for interesting threads to pop up, then have a look and see if I've got some input. Sometimes it pisses me off a bit, but mostly I find it interesting.

~ Training focus. For this Character, Leadership, Gallente/Minmatar, and EWAR. Long term PvP foundation and whatever I think might add a bit. Not quite random. My Alt is Gunnery, a bit of Drones, and Amarr ships, moving towards Minmatar. Very PvP focused without much support skills.

~ Something you don't like about EVE. Tough one. I'm fairly open-minded, and don't think ill about anything that isn't going to change--currently--as far as mechanics go. I suppose what I don't like about EVE is all strictly social aspects. Spam, scam, and players who demand control of every situation. Otherwise, good.

~ Start date. 10 days ago so like Sept 26th 2012

~ Memorable experience. So to keep it short we are roaming around low sec faction war area and this other militia guy keeps popping up due to overviews being messed up on several of us new players as a war target. We must have locked and scrammed him half a dozen times before we got it sorted and every time he would show up confusion in comms. Only my second roam and so its nice to know i am not the only one out there that is screwing everything up:P

~ Thoughts on EVE. Hmm its very similar in a lot of ways to another game i fell in love with Magic the Gathering, Fitting your ship is a lot like building your deck and just like that game it is equal amount deck building (Fitting) And playing skill that makes the difference. The other thing is it may sound weird but the deeper you dig in this game the deeper you get, where most games the deeper you dig the shallower the game is.

~ Impression of the Forums. They are forums everything should be taken with grain of salt

~ Training focus. I am now finally pointed in the right direction and working on fitting skills.

~ Something you don't like about EVE. Currently i would say the ability to make money in game. Its not really obvious and most players don't want to let out their secrets for actually making profit. I am blessed with a corp that does ship replacement but no one likes feeling like a leech on their corp.

Edit:

Thought i would add in what brought me to Eve was the Eve to Dust Orbital Bombardment. In the MMO industry these guys seem to be the only ones pushing the boundaries.

Though older then 1 year old...

What I'm looking for:

~ Start date.

End of september 2010, with this character. Before that did a couple of trial accounts during 2008 and 2009, but those times never got hooked to EVE.

~ Memorable experience. Keep it brief, but tell us something about an achievement or interesting event that you experienced or witnessed.

Well, got ganked by war targets. Moved some corporations, created my own which failed. Moved to null-sec alliance which we quickly left cause they were ****. Moved into another null alliance which was pretty decent at that time. Got some kills while being blown up to pieces too. Alliance went from good into a bad dictatorship, so left and eventually joined yet another null alliance. Rinse and repeat, they were good until someone got a bit power hungry and took full control (happened last week), so now moving again. Direction still partly unkown.

~ Thoughts on EVE. Again, briefly summarize your experience and thoughts.

Great game, though CCP did make some mistakes (Incarna) and also made the entry level a bit too low in my opinion. But still promising what is to come in Winter exp. so we will wait and see.

~ Impression of the Forums. As above.

Only 3 places I really look on the forums: New Citizen Q&A, Recruitment and Character Bazaar. But those look great.

~ Training focus. What you plan to do in EVE, or have begun training for.

Hmz, with 6 accounts and with that 6 'main' characters, a mixture of Industry, PvP (subcap and capital).

~ Something you don't like about EVE. Can be mechanics, social, or whatever.

Null-sec, specially the SOV part. It's too much politics and not enough fun. Need some work so that those 4 big powerblocks can't sustain themself.

~ Start date. I can't remember.

~ Memorable experience. Keep it brief, but tell us something about an achievement or interesting event that you experienced or witnessed. Oh boy, I really love this question! Ok ok, so like, I was mining this rock one day right & like, it disappeared!

~ Thoughts on EVE. Again, briefly summarize your experience and thoughts. I though this game was another Red Light because of the name, but I really do love spaceships!

~ Impression of the Forums. As above. I love the forums, I just can't stop posting!

~ Training focus. What you plan to do in EVE, or have begun training for. Well someday I want to fly one of those big penises to compensate for my... Anyway, hooray for giant penises!

~ Something you don't like about EVE. Can be mechanics, social, or whatever. Risk-free AFK mining.

~ Start date - Sometime last week. I picked up the $5 deal on Amazon.

~ Memorable experience - After all the intro missions, I decided to try scanning a low-sec system (0.4). Found a Gneiss deposit guarded by a pair of rogue drones. I bookmarked it, left and came back with my combat ship. Barely managed to take them both down, was well into my armor with damage. Triumphant, I went to loot... then a huge player ship warped in, one-shot me, then podded me. Took me a minute to figure out WTF just happened. Shocked

~ Thoughts on EVE - Has the potential to be really fun, but the advertising & word of mouth don't really explain what the game is about. "Sandbox" is way too vague, and "you make your own adventures" just translates to "there is no content, just PvP" in outsider's eyes. Some more solo-appropriate content would help folks ease into the game; right now, you're basically expected to run the tutorial & immediately join a corp. At least the tutorial is much better than it used to be, and the Agent system is much easier to figure out. I had a trial account a couple years ago, and gave up because I just couldn't figure out what to do.

~ Impression of the Forums - A bit barren, and a lot of vitriol, with some really good info sprinkled here and there.

~ Training focus - Exploration/salvaging. Focusing mostly on scanning, PvE combat & salvaging , with archaeology secondary.

~ Dislikes about EVE - You'd never know the game's backstory without reading the website or EVElopedia; the game intro only gives you the most bare description of the setting (gate blew up, you're a pilot, go at it). Character creation doesn't make it clear what the advantages & disadvantages each "race" has, or the importance of attributes. It's very easy to choose a bad combination, only to find out weeks later the character is gimped for your preferred gameplay.

EDIT: Oooh, I didn' t know about this killdata site before.

Character race / bloodline doesn't matter anymore.

All possible choices start with the same attribute stats, the only difference between races are the racial frigate skill + racial favorite gun skills.

And for bloodlines, it's the default NPC corp you enter + starting location.

You can't gimp your character anymore by bad race / bloodline or be locked out of something.

Start date: 2012.09.15 ( 24 days old as i am posting this now )

~ Memorable experience. I am very young eve pilot, so i dont have much memorable experiences yet. though it was Jaw droping how much my mining yeld increased jumping from osprey to retriever! i was like: "osprey, get out of my sight, you disgust me"

~ Thoughts on EVE. I always wanted to try EVE, because i loved full loot pvp, the whole risk and reward system like back in the UO times, i did not realised EVE is so much deeper though. i I tried starting EVE few years ago, but i got confused and did not even finished 14 days trial. I gave it a go now and i subbed to 3 months on my second day. A lot of it has to do with me being more mature, plus the new tutorial system is great and helps a lot to understand basics. that was a very good step towards noob friendliness.
the business plan of EVE online is the best out of all MMORPGs i ever. ability to buy Sub and then use ISK to buy plex and the other way around is just pure AWESOME. no need to buy the game it self and you get all expansions. I wish other MMorpgs would learn from this business plan. I dont think i will be buying plex to sub my account, but if i will be getting second account i will be plexing it.

~ Impression of the Forums. I LOVED EVE A LOT, before i came across forums. the mistery of world, corprotations, power struggle, pirates etc, was huge part of my EVE immersion. After discovering forums i still LOVE EVE A LOT, but i realised that if i want to enjoy eve i better stay away from some forum parts. There is a huge amount of moaners, rants, biitching, trolling etc, what is shocking in game it self, people are really nice and very helpfull to noobs. yes there are pirates and dicks, but at least thats their job in eve to be dicks and pirates. if they do manage to **** of people ( me included ), then it means they are "doing it right".
Damn, someone can flipped me on my first week, i asked in general chat why someone stole my ore and still circling around?! shouldnt he run?! So i got explanation about baiting and can flipping. The thief realised i am pure noob and gave me my can back and left me alone. At least some thiefs have some honor. ( i do realise there are a lot of pricks in game itself, where scaming is part of the game, but i love that part of eve, even if i am scammer/pirate target )
So to keep it short:

community in EVE game is A +
community in forums is D -

~ Training focus. i am only 3 weeks old, so i was fully focused on mining. My plan is to get some skills for moderate income, so i can fund my fun activities with it. I am planing to lose a lot of ships untill i will learn how to play eve, so mining is a great for funding it. So far i trained up for retirever and that thing is just pure SEX. I managed to mine myself 110mil worth of ores yesterday alone, while reading forums, playing borderlands 2 and watching movies. ( having 3 monitors works awesome with eve online.) So now i got few mills in bank and i started training some offencive skills. someone in corp linked "Drake" ship and i felt in love with it. ill be able to fly that bastard tomorrow! It will be a ship in which i will learn about security missions.

~ Something you don't like about EVE. What i dont like? hmmm i did not even though about it. there is nothing really i dont like about it. I was never a spaceship nerd, but i really enjoy EVE and planing on staying for a while. that power of 2 is very very damn tempting now.

Start Date: 21 May 2012

Memorable Experience: Losing my first ship; corp chat drama; attempting to break 5km/s in a newb-fit Atron.

Thoughts on EVE: Easily the most rewarding MMO. Offers meaningful investment of time and energy, both positive and negative consequences.

Impression of the Forums: Pretty active, which is a sign of a good community.

Training Focus: Keeping eyes open for a small corp with focus on small-gang and solo PvP, and as such I'm working on Assault Frigs. Also training Covert Ops and Exploration to pay my bills. On the advice of another player, I already got my Core Navigation Elite certificate out of the way.

Dislike about EVE: I've heard the ECM mechanic in this game is total bullshit, but I haven't personally had the displeasure. Yet.

It's DT, so great time to answer this one:

Start date
late august on two accounts, co-mains if you like, this being one of them.

Memorable experience
Has to be first PvP kill, on an alt. Went to low-sec w/ a corp mate to cause trouble, realizing we'd get killed within seconds. Found our first 'prey', made every noob mistake possible save one (more on that in a second), found myself fleeing in my pod in about 15 seconds. Retreated to a .6, refitted ship, insured ship, un-docked. Watched w/ glee as CONCORD blasted my dumb ***. Damn GCC.... Third time was the charm. Got in a scrap and by dumb luck won.

Thoughts on EVE
Why didn't I find this earlier?

Impression of the Forums
I'm amazed at how bi-polar and helpful it is. I've seen the same ppl troll up GD and bend over backwards to help in NC Q&A.

Training focus
I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up, but indy skills, exploration and PvP look interesting.

Something you don't like about EVE
I haven't really haven't found anything in-game to not like, but I do think the mac-client could use a little love.

EvE, it's all about tear managment.

~ Start date - I believe I'm about two weeks out of the womb.

~ Memorable experience - There I was in the Heydieles system finishing my bowl of celestial oats, when all of a sudden I see man. Nay! A beast, outside of the station I had once called home. His menacing nature immediately stood out to me and into my condor I went. Bursting out of the station like a flash of malevolent awesomeness I plunged toward my target with the determination and vigilance of a screaming 2 year old. Like a flurry of plastic spoons, I attacked! First firing up my trusty microwarpdrive, I flew with the speed and grace of a well traveled brick. Then I proceeded to disable his warp drive, this heathen was going nowhere. Once I was sure I had the upper hand, I laid waste onto his tiny vessel, reigning hellfire from every direction. As my rockets pummeled his poor ship, I began to cheer with a bloodlust roar of victory as he did not even have time to react to the onslaught.

It seemed my victory was at hand until I realized the impossible. His ship was still intact! Barely a scratch on the surface of it's shields, the beast roared with amusement at my abysmal efforts even yawning to drill in the inevitable fact that I had soon come to realize...I was screwed!

I immediately warped to a different station fearing for my life as I politely thanked him for allowing me the target practice in hopes of throwing him off my trail. The plan worked as I am still alive to this day to tell you tale.

Moral of this story - Size doesn't matter!

~ Thoughts on EVE - Absolutely love this game! Can't understand why I didn't take the plunge years ago. You can be anyone/thing that you want in this universe, the only restrictions are within your mind. And 10ft away from your desk without wireless devices.

~ Impression of the Forums - Pretty new to the forums, I.e. today but so far enjoying them, seem very helpful.

~ Training focus - Focus for Zoe is mainly PVP but with hint of business I believe.

~ Something you don't like about EVE - Being unable to train multiple toons at the same on a single account. Very frustrating

I started playing in May this year. This is my main and only character.

I have yet to have anything exciting happen in EVE.

I love EVE and plan to stay.
I think the forums are a waste of virtual space.

I have no plan besides doing whatever I feel like.

There isn't anything I don't like about EVE.

I didn't think you were serious when you said you had no memorable experience, then I looked at your presence on Battleclinic. Those losses are boring; a 1.2 million ISK empty transport and a similarly cheap PvP Executioner that basically died before the action. Take some risk man, ship up in something a little pricy and almost beyond your means and go lose it.Smile

Of course, memorable and exciting aren't exactly the same things, but getting your blood pumping with impending doom does tend to help you remember things a little better. Nothing like a good old fashioned, "where the *expletive* did they come from," followed by a commitment to a fight you never expected or wanted in a ship you really can't afford to lose. ..well, think you can't anyway; always best if you do this before you've been here too long.
