Worth setting a caldari medium tower for research & copying BPOs at non-caldari space?

We live in low-sec in non-caldari space.

We have a system near by with local isotopes which we use to get the fuel we need for our two logistics towers.
Our towers don't have room for labs, and we want to put an extra one with 5 labs, which I believe is enough to give our 2 interested members the option to do their work (and maybe a room for a third or a few empty slots for others).

A caldari tower will allow extra lab plus enough room for some defense when need to. A local type tower might be pushing it regarding CPU.

So what do you think?
I don't want to force them to go to high-sec for their work so it will be easier on logistics side to get the isotopes (need a JF every few weeks to get some isotopes from the hubs), and a local tower will allow us to expand and be more sell sustained.

This POS planner should help you:

Thanks for the link, but its not exactly what I was asking.
I know the math of what I can or can't regarding cpu and power.

My problem is if its worth importing the isotopes to lets say minmatar low-sec, and risking losing a hauler and isk, vs losing research and copy jobs, in order to be self-sufficient.

Some food for thought, why a Small POS may be the right thing for you/your corp.

2 regular and 1 advanced research facility can be anchored and will provide you with more then enough slots for even 3 characters trained to lvl 2-4's science slot skills.

If you know what your doing and your characters and or corp members need more then go head and start with medium.

The OP's question is interesting, and I'm wondering if there is published research on this point.

I have searched for, but have not found, data on what volume of the different types of potential uses is necessary to make a station of the various sizes viable.

From my (very limited) understanding, the categories of variables would be:

  • Cost of Station

  • Cost of Upkeep

    Cost of Materials

    Manhours Required

    Volume of Output

    Estimated Market Price per Unit

If there has been research published on this, I'd be glad to be directed towards

Im a bit confused as to what you outline your options are.
also how much capacity you actually need, What kind of lab compliment are you looking at? you say 5 or so, Which types? can they fit into mediums of your racial type? or does it have to be caldari?
are you looking at a large caldari? or two mediums?
are these to be defended positions?
or removable in times of attack?

With a jf and an orca you can get anything from hisec through to lowsec. how much time are you willing to put into this?
If you arent planning at running at a Larges full capacity but rather at a medium towers, then id say go with the medium and add mediums as needed. If you really have the intrest from your corp for a large, or want to add some goo mining to it then go with the large. fuel in your case is the limiting factor.
