Axis and Allies board game, scrubs.

There is no luck in Diplomacy, there is no dice.

While Ill admit that A&A is a good game, there is no real diplomacy involved, since the sides are predetermined before the game starts.

Well it is a terrible game imo.

Diplomacy is excellent. I used to play it live with friends, then later via email on AOL. Kind of like a chess game between 7 people. The diplomacy part comes in because your kingdom (France, Germany, Austria, Russia, etc.) has neighbors on all sides. If you use an army to attack a neighboring province in Austria, the army is no longer defending your province that it's coming from. That leaves it open to being snagged by Russia. So before attacking Austria, you better have a deal in place with Russia. There's a diplomacy (secret deal-making) phase, then everybody writes down their orders, then everybody's orders are executed at once. Lots of surprises, because of course people write orders that don't necessarily follow the promises they made in the deal-making phase.

It's a pure battle of wits, and the situations get really complicated. You have to do these huge if-ten analyses: "If Germany supports Munich with its army in Ruhr, then my attack on Munich will fail. But if France attacks Ruhr, that will cut the Ruhr army's support and my attack will succeed. But Germany can also support Munich with its army in Kiel. But it may use that army to attack Russia in Denmark. What about Austria? We have a deal for four more turns. But this attack is a perfect chance for him to backstab me now and boot me out of Tyrolia."

Lots of fun. Maybe someday I'll join one of the online Diplomacy play-by-email groups.

Yea, I do get cutthroat when I play monoply. 16 hr games and we only stop because we have to go to work 30 mins later. For Risk, my longest game was 2 weeks.

Btw, you do not need luck to be good at monoply. you just have to be good at conviencing the other players that what you have to offer is better than what you want from them. It's a game of landlords screwing over its tenants and other landlords. Where you land on the board really doesn't matter. You have to learn to work with what you get.

I form allies in risk and pool reinforcements together. When it gets to the point of betrayal, I make sure I have all the reinforcements and take out my ex-ally and keep the other opponent at bay. I always make sure there is atleast one other player I'm still playing against so my ally is completely caught off guard. Btw, I've never lost a game of risk in 8 yrs.


Based on the way I play these games, I think I would love Diplomacy.

See you don't even need boardwalk to make money or be good. All you need is 3 colors off the other sides to bankrupt any of the other players. I usually go for the ones I land on the most, which are the light blues, orange, and reds. Maybe yellows or greens if I'm landing on them a lot, depends on the game. i don't even get board walk unless it's through auction or it goes back to the bank after I make the holder go bankrupt.

I love the game. I found one of my copies under the bed the other day when hoovering.

My sole claim to fame, other than running a Diplomacy zine in the 70s and 80s was to fly over to the US and actually winning the US DipCon in the mid 80s.

Which surprised everyone as I was generally a poor player. But I do love the game and it played posally is far, far, better than around a table because you don't know what is is being discusse between the other players.
