Dealing With Unpowered/Abandoned POSes - Linking longevity with strontium in the hold

Just wondering what everyone else thinks of this idea. I'm going to guess someone may have already proposed this, but if not, I'll gladly hog the credit ^^

Seems like, at least in the area I'm in, there's a ton of stations just sitting anchored, but unused. Hard to say whether or not they actually are abandoned or not, but, regardless, it's kind of frustrating trying to find a spot to drop a tower.

My thought for dealing with abandoned POS is to link how long the tower can stay anchored with the amount of strontium loaded in the tower.

If a tower is anchored but offline, the strontium gets slowly burned. You can rationalize it saying that it's being used to protect the station from the rough environment in space.

Once there is no more strontium to protect the station, the armor/structure of the tower slowly starts to degrade, and after, say, 1-4 weeks (depending on the size), will eventually disappear.

If the tower is truly abandoned, it will eventually get cleared out and free up some precious real estate.

If the owner decides they want to maintain the tower anchored but powered down, they can continue to feed strontium into the tower to keep the station protected.

Thoughts?

I like your idea, but I'd like to see a method for abandoned towers to be recoverable.

Slow Stront burn for protection/crew life support - 7 days.
Once the Stront is consumed the tower starts taking damage and the crew is running on reserves - lasts 2/4/6 weeks depending on size.

Out of fuel and Stront - The tower has no defenses and no power or CPU. The normal crew has evacuated and/or been exposed to cold with no food, water or oxygen; therefore the normal systems that prevent unauthorized tampering no longer function.

The tower can be repped and unanchored by anyone or the owner can fuel and/or Stront the tower for longevity. Maybe add the necessity of using a hacking or analyzing module to recover the tower if owned by someone else.

If the tower is not reclaimed/refueled before the hull reaches 0 HP it explodes in a glorious ball of failure and is replaced by tower debris which is then unceremoniously removed at DT.

A failmail is sent to the owner upon reclamation/detonation.

*The repping part may need adjustment as there is no viable hull repper. Maybe only require armor or shield/armor to unanchor and necessitate that the tower be repaired at a station prior to redeployment/sale.

If your concern is towers clogging the moons, this will resolve it. The towers will probably be cleared faster by reclamation than degradation. With patience you can not only get your moon, but a free tower and mods. Being a w-space dweller and diver I have wanted this functionality for some time as I come across many abandoned towers. Reclaiming old towers would essentially be a mini-profession. Podding everyone out of a hole and waiting a few weeks would be another part of said profession. Twisted Denial of access to the tower would be another method of removing it instead of having to resort to the oh-so-exciting method of POS bashing, though this would be somewhat impractical due to the 7 days of Stront.

Declare war. Blow up POS. Problem solved.

Why introduce mechanics for keeping a structure anchored when there is a perfectly functional mechanic for getting rid of an abandoned POS already in place?

Edit: and please, for the love of all that is holy and Australian, do not ever suggest a mechanic which requires stuff to be done at downtime.

The idea is intended for automatic removal of abandoned POS's. They litter space and are a drag on resources... though maybe not much. My twist offers the ability for those assets to be reclaimed and sold or put to use.

Sorry about the DT removal... maybe just remove them from space during the glorious ball of failure without the wreck.
