How did EvE's trade hubs form?

Just curious, how did places like Jita 4-4, Dodixie, Amarr etc. come to be the main trade hubs of EvE?

Through coincidence or deliberation?

Relation to agents, accessibility, station slots, and anything else that caused people to congregate. When the old stargate system was dismantled, Yulai died off, so the busiest systems became the new trade hubs. Jita was a big mission system, Amarr is best proximity to several regions, etc. (i.e. the traders jsut moved to where the people were).

There's nothing worse than an EVE player, generally considered to be top of the food chain in the MMO world, that cannot smacktalk with wit and coherency.

Coincidence.

Or rather: CCP didn't say 'these are your hubs'

Players went: This system fits what I want (proximity to mission systems, proximity to multiple regions, decent sec status), so I'll buy and sell here.
Other players went: I can get what I want here, so I go here.
So other players went: Everyone is going here, so I'll go here.

Jita is Jita, because it's Jita. That's the main reason now.

Woo! CSM XI!

They were formed by Intelligent design.

In the beginning the Jovians created the heavens and Jita 4-4. Now Jita 4-4 was without form and void, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of the Jovians was hovering over the station.

And the Jovians said, “Let there be isk,” and there was isk. The Jovians saw that isk was good, and they separated isk into profit and loss. The Jovians called the profit “awesome” and the loss they called "despicable." And there was profit, and there was loss—the first day.

And the Jovians said, “Let there be a space between the undock and warp point” So the Jovians made the space and separated the undock and warp points. And it was so. The Jovians called the space “the gank zone” And there were ganks and escapes—the second day.

And the Jovians said, “Let the market be gathered in one place, and let a trade hub appear.” And it was so. The Jovians called the the trade hub "Jita 4-4” and the gathered pilots he called “capsuleers.” And the Jovians saw that it was good.

Then the Jovians said, “Let the trade hub produce wealth: wealth from producing and mining, exploiting and scamming.” And it was so. The trade hub produced wealth; wealth from producing, and mining, expoiting and scamming, each according to their kinds. And the Jovians saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

I am pretty sure that is how it happened.

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away...

When Eve first started, the place was huge compared to the number of players. The market weren't close to what we have today. BPO cost was a factor, where to get minerals likewise and most of all the entire content was more driven by NPC interaction.
Imagine a place with out outpost or POS, huge stretches of space was deserted and had very little value.
As such mission hubs was the natural place to converge. It was there you could find any kind of market.

If I remember correctly Jita had the best navy agent way back in the days, they later removed them because of lag issues.
I know for a fact that Dodixie was nothing before the replaced all the agents back in 2000-something.
We moved our business from Oursalert (I think) that before that had the best Fed navy agent in Hi-sec.
Dodixie had the best lvl 4 agent and Aunia had one of the best lvl 3 agent. Before they changed the stargate routes it was also only 1 jump from Dodi to Aunia and another system don't remember the name now, mainly because it was so long ago and lower tier agents have long ago played out there role as an attraction to the traders.
My bet is that it was something similar for Amarr and other places.

As the player base grew so did the market, also as CCP has constantly been working on player to player interaction. The trade hubs have grown beyond that. Now a days the old trade hubs live on, on old merits and a historic value and the fact that players needs these hot spots in order to conduct the business of today's EVE. Long ago were the days you only needed to buy the minerals and eventually mine some of your own in order to produce the products that were in demand.

Now when new players come in to EVE, it is just naturally that they go where the trade is. Also everyone keeps pointing them in that direction if they ever ask the question.
I am not sure that today's markets are placed perfectly according to the geography of EVE.

It important to remember that while all level 4 agents are the same quality now; They didn't use to be. Also there use to be a lot more variation in LP stores. As a result there were only a handful of agents that gave the best rewards for missions and markets sprang up around these agents. Jita became the market hub due to the fact that back in the day as Caldari were most common racial type. (Mostly due to missiles* being so good and a quirk in attributes back then.) Jita had the best one of the highest quality agents, the best LP store(Navy), and didn't tend to give missions in LS. Most other hubs came into existence for similar reasons. Dodixie for example has a level 4 Navy agent, and there is a Fed agent one system over. Mission running use to be what drove Eve's economy.

* Back in the day you could one shot frigates with torps from 100km, and Navy Issue Ravens were considered the best ship in existence for everything.

The invisible hand.

It works. Sometimes.

Other theory: Location, location, location. Oh, and sec status.

I'd suggest that Amarr is mainly because of the name and the RP significance.

lol. no.

if you look at all the hubs, you'll discover they tend to have a high gate counts.

This is the best explanation someone have came up for years so that must be the truth.
The rest of the "mission hubs" and "agent running" explanations are so boring so I believe they are lies and imagination of the practical mind...

Another factor was the positioning of the jumpgates. When Eve had less players, ccp at some point decided that having 4 gates, each leading directly into one factions space, would be a good plan, to stop people having to travel through loads of empty empty systems, so they made those 4 gates (think they had a name like "express gates" or "highway routes" or something) all meet in the concord controlled system of Yulai, which became the trade hub for the whole game in it's early years.

However after a while more people played and ccp decided these supergate things made the universe too small, and removed them . Turning Yulai into the obscure system in high sec genesis it is today. Traders eventualy moved to systems that were close to other regions, had good agents and catchy, easy to spell names like Amarr, Jita, Rens and errr Oursaleart (probably explains why it eventualy moved to dodixie).

Now they're just the trade hubs because they're the trade hubs. Jita most likely gets a boost because a lot of new players start Caldari, and it's the busiest part of high sec.
