I saw a thread on here about choosing a name for a corn snake and it got me thinking, who here owns any exotic pets?

Personally I own a Hermann's tortoise, and I am in the process of setting up a tank for two three striped mud turtles.

Come on exotic pet lovers, lets hear what you got!

I have a corn snake. They're really interesting reptiles, and easy to care for because they'll eat frozen food. Mine's not finicky at all-- you put the food there, in a minute it's gone.

The only word of caution is corn snakes are active, and they want to get out of the tank and cruise around. I feel like I need to take my snake out for some cruising time every day. Basically, that means snake-herding, to keep him/her from disappearing into the woodwork. They're quick, and if you take your eye off for a second, they're gone.

Used to have an Eastern painted turtle. Unfortunately, one night he/she suddenly died. I have no idea what caused that. A better pet than snakes are, in my opinion. Very gentle, and almost seem kind of affectionate. On warm days, we could take Turtle out in the yard and let him truck bask on the porch and around in the grass.

You can catch one on a spring or summer night, any time between around dusk and early morning. They like lawns and vegetable gardens out in the country. If it's been dry and you water the grass or garden, the armadillos will show up to dig the soft ground for worms. You need a feed bag or a cage to catch them, though. You can walk right up to them and they won't run away. But when you try to grab them, they jump straight up. You can't get a grip on that round shell coming straight up through your hands.

congo african grey, rosy boa, and though not exactly "exotic" I'm getting some pure white parakeets in the coming weeks which I already have a new cage set up for.

I'm in it for the money

I am a licensed Falconer. While I don’t consider her a pet I am caring for and hunting with a female Red-tailed Hawk.

Tortoises, turtles, snakes, crocodiles, birds ( and a hawk at that! ), and even an armadillo!

If we get some more exotic mammals we can start a zoo!

Any tarantula, scorpion, or giant centipede owners on here?

A long Long time ago, in a galaxy far far away.

when I was a camp councilor, I captured a small family of amardillos and put them in the senior girls councelor's cabin. Hilarity ensued.

I've had a ferret once. Her name was Bell and she was awesome. She was as lazy as I am. But my dog got a hold of her when I was out and she got out of the cage.

My best pet I ever had was a chicken. You think paper training a cat was hard, try a chicken. A real test of patience. She would curl up in my lap as I played games. It was really cute. Yes, I said cute, shaddap! We didn't give her any special names, just Chicken. (we aren't good at coming up with names) I called her Tyson for a while towards the end. And yes, you can call me sick and twisted but she did eat fried chicken. She passed when another dog got a hold of her. Sad

I squashed a few of those recently. A giant centipede got away and is hiding somewhere.

I've kept tropical fish and reptiles. First reptile I ever had was male Emerald Swift. He was a beauty. Unfortunately, he was dead set on digging his own burrow, and I was inexperienced in anchoring rocks, and, well... yeah.

Can you hear them? They are calling to us. It is beautiful. http://thegreattichim.wordpress.com/

I keep an Irish Redheaded *****

I say keep... we're married and I worship her, but hey, trust me she is as exotic as I'd ever want to get.

I used to keep Tarantulas until the GF at the time insisted she wasn't spending another moment in my bed with that "gurt hairy spider" watching her, the threat of "lackonookie" decided matters and the spider went to my brother. These days I just have a cat.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

my girlfriend has 10 geese.

10 everhonking useless creatures.

Seriously. That story, Scrooge, three ghosts, all that - Cratchet's family ate what on Christmas? Goose. Why? Because when you are poor that's all you can afford. They are not worth eating. Even their eggs taste like crap unless you have to make an omelet for a team of lumberjacks.

Freaking honktards.

I have ants. Camponotus herculaneus, Lasius niger and Messor barborus. I just got the Camponotus herculaneus a few weeks ago, one worker already got tangled up in the cotton closing off the test tube they are in and died... The other two Lasius niger colony queens died on arrival but it's no big loss. I also caught one queen myself, she is the most robust naturally. I had two Messor barborus queens but one just walked out the arena I built for them and disappeared.. I normally have some kind of chemical that deters them from leaving that arena but she just said "nope" and ****** off.

I've had several ferrets over the years, the latest is a male, about 4 years old named Vinnie the Biscuit (see any resemblance to a certain character name?). I really like having them around, though litter training can be difficult.

Also, living in north florida we have reptiles galore. In the spring we sometimes find a hatchling slider turtle or two and keep them for a year or two then release them back into the wild once they are 4 or 6 inches around (10 or 15 cms for you non USians).

Ha ha, does your brother call that spider "Lackanookie"? That's a great name for any kind of crawly or slithery pet. I'd name my next one that, but eventually my kids would get old enough to understand the joke.

I used to have an African mongoose. Man, what a fun pet. Never had a ferret, but similar I guess. His favorite game was to be thrown across the room. He'd just roll across the floor and keep coming back for more. The only drawback is the things are continually hungry and always rooting around the premises for food. Once it grabbed my sister's rescued baby squirrel and hid behind the fridge crunching away on it. Pretty unpleasant for everybody, and Mom didn't like that much. Not long after that, it made off with an entire baked red snapper that had just been put on the dinner table. That's when I had to adopt it out to my friend.
