Why not make one big monument to every pilot ever that lost his life? And someone could go there and do what he want. Site with beacon, showing on overview.

However the final proposal would look like, if ever considered, i support the petition. Make it happen.

EVE is EVE and RL is RL. But EVE players and the EVE community are much more than just virtual.

Sean Smith was murdered in a maddening aggression by radicals, but that is real life not EVE. I support the idea that we should honor exceptional player personalities, who contributed to this game, but we should keep that apart from our sorrow about real life losses.

Therefore, i dont like the idea of a graveyard or things like that. I would support the idea of player voted monuments (and yes of course the first one should be for vile rat)

my suggestion for the process.

1.) Quaterly alliance executor CEOs can hand in a nominee and his story, why he deserves a monument and where it should be placed.

2.) the alliance leaders vote a TOP10 list from the full nominee list, which is eventually parsed by CCP for formal aspects

3.) all eve players vote based on the TOP10

4.) once the winner is identified, the nominating alliance is contacted by a GM that they are allowed to build a monument

5.) an outpost-like egg is placed by the GM in the system which was proposed. The egg already has a customized show info, telling the story of the nominee

6.) the egg is to be filled within 1 week with ressources (approximately valuing 100Bn ISK, might be minerals, or other resources, might be AUR, of a combination of above) otherwise it disappears again.

7.) once the egg is filled in given time, it is replaced by a permanent monument

=> 4 monuments a year at max
=> multistage review process preventing abuse
=> a ingame quorum mechanism (if egg doesnt get filled up, it gets lost)

In some cases deceased players would be honored, in some retired players and in some active as ever players, but that feels right for me

For players as iconic as vile rat I feel like having them memorialized in the game world is an amazing way to honor them. Somewhere I saw someone suggest a special edition ship in game called the vile rat that could only lock blues. In the end I think that the decision on how to memorialize iconic players should be totally in the hands of the CSM.

I support the petition and I feel it should be a Memorial like the Vietnam War Memorial Wall; a simple abstract object that list the players name and their...date of death

Doesnt belong in the sandbox game. And what would happen if someone would morbidly do the opposite and spoil it - inquisitions? or CCP should create a police and enforce code of conduct? Again if someone wants it can be done by 3rd party.

It would be far better as a developer-style project, in my opinion.

I'm guessing that everyone, at one time or another, has made a journey to the EVE gate, even though there's no real tangible reason to go there. It does nothing, doesn't look particularly impressive . . . but there is just something solemn about the place. Unless you lack all imagination and heart, there's something oddly emotional about that particular place in this video game universe. That's why many would like to see this idea implemented there, and not someplace busy like Jita (which also lacks the symbolism of the EVE gate).

People place obituaries in newspapers all the time, and do so by providing some proof of death - a minimal procedural step that CCP could copy. The fact is that a lot of people spend a lot of time in this game (and playing this game inevitably means spending a lot of time outside of the game "playing" the game as well). It's a unique game in that respect, and there just really isn't a downside to having a unique memorial in-game for those who passed on IRL.

I don't see any real concern about griefers, either. I suppose CONCORD could hang around the pocket to enforce solemnity, but the gate is far enough away from anything worthwhile to make such actions either pointless, avoidable, or at a minimum some of the flavor that makes EVE what it is anyway. What a memorial would do is provide another "wow" moment for those players who have made the pilgrimage to the EVE gate (or not - no reason to go there if you don't want to). Conversely, it would make a fantastic place for friends and family of those who loved EVE enough to want a memorial to gather, stare at the stars, and reminisce.

For a very insignificant administrative cost, CCP could add a feature to this game that (again) sets it apart from any other MMO on the market and (again) demonstrates why EVE is more than just a "bottom-line" type of money grab and more of a game designed for gamers.

-EDIT-

Note that although the cost to implement this is small each new memorial they add has to be tested not break anything else, so there is actually a trade off there

+1

but some pilots mention here it probably requires highly controlled, so some pilots wants to use this area, like burn jita etc. it may not be a graveyard. it may be a memorial, a statue, people names are written with an inscription..

Instead of cans, how about coffins that are anchored in rows like a real cemetery. Click on the coffins would give information on the players who passed on their past, their history, and their achievements. People could come to the non-fire zone and leave their messages on the guest book of that player who passed on. This would be touching and could definitely be suited into Eve Lure.... could even have models of their ships floating behind the coffins.

So +1 to this idea.

It would be in the Eve Gate system.

It would be a deadspace pocket accessed via an acceleration gate. This would avoid cluttering the Eve Gate system.

Permanently anchored memorial cans would be placed in the cemetery. The memorial cans do not expire. Obviously something nicer than a secure can would be preferred.

A petition would be needed to request a memorial can to prevent abuse.
* The memorial can's name would be set to the name of the Player's main character.
* If a petition has enough support, a epitaph could also be included.
* A GM would place the can, preferably in a grid pattern. Meaning, randomly placed memorial cans would be tacky.

Pretty graphic for the memorial can.
Ability to store player messages in the can that can be read by the public.

  • How are CCP going to verify someone is dead?

  • Popularity contests suck

  • Will this backdate to all players who are already dead, or will it just be for new ones?

  • Will there be a cut off for eligibility - will trial accounts get one?

  • How will CCP respond to takedown requests from RL next of kin who think its tacky?

  • With 350k subscribers, in 10 years time will there be 60000 memorials in one dead space pocket?

  • Can I fake my own death?

  • How will memorial BPOs be seeded?

Don't forget the real headache: controversial people.

If a murderer/sexual predator/war criminal/politically unpopular person plays Eve and gets an in-game memorial, how much out of game grief will CCP get for "honoring" a bad person?

Especially when the definition of a bad person varies according to culture and country?

Pon Farr Memorial: once every 7 years, all the carebears in high-sec must PvP or they will be temp-banned.

Yulai sounds like a suitable system for this. Having had a former executor die in a auto accident, I would like to have a chance to add a small memorial to him.
