I am curious as to how people have this information though...When the various news services can't even seem to confirm the death or that it was an American?

I can't express things as eloquently as people above, suffice it to say the long form is pretty similar in thought process to what Verone has said.

It is always a shame to hear about these tragedies, it's bad enough when it is people outside the Eve universe but when it is someone we know (whether personally or by reputation) it hurts even more.

Much respect for the flood of outpost renaming appearing on DOTLAN. A fitting memorial for someone so involved in the "constructive" parts of New Eden. I'm sure some of those wouldn't be there today without Vile Rat's diplomatic ability.

The family are usually notified pretty quickly, they'll release the details to the news when they think it's appropriate.
