I dont know if any of you guys have played minecraft, but its a game where you mine. alot. And it never seemed to get dull. I think its because you never really know what you are gonna get. You never really know whats on the other side of that stone you just mined. Its always somewhat exciting.

Maybe EVE should be a bit more like this? Instead of having the overview telling you excactly what you are gonna get from the second you warp in, have the asteroids yield random amounts of each ore type, of course with veldspar being more common, scordite a bit less and so on. Perhaps when mining any of these asteroids there should be a small chance of gas clouds forming, for further mining.

Random roids is already being considered, together with asteroid belts...

Also.. some kind of new pirate.. one that emerges silently from behind the roids and sneaks up on you.. and then explodes.

That and having pirate spawns trigger from random asteroids would be fun...

I like the idea that mining can be made more interesting.

Please keep in mind, however, that we cannot block solo mining efforts.
We must keep it possible to play solo, even as we encourage more group play.

perhaps instead of each asteroid being a total discreet object, have it have variable ore levels in different places that slowly drain, like PI materials on planets, only at a much faster pace.

Like in real life, asteroids deposits are not random and definitely not constantly changing types. Of course in real life, you wouldn't know the asteroids deposit without actually scanning them directly, then you have a layout what the asteroid is! Can't go too much with random, then the economy would crash because there be less of what players need to build. I can see asteroids being unknown type until scanned, which makes it more fun, because you never know what type of asteroid you will run into.

Random roids sounds cool.

I suggested something like this a while back. Basically make larger roids with concentrations of minerals that deplete. AFK mining would still be possible, but at lower yields because your target areas would get burned out rather quickly.

Not sure how useful this would be against bots.
