Scanning Improvements

Hello!
I am here to propose some ideas on how there could be some improvements to the current scanning system.

I will add a little background information before I ramble further. (You can skip if you so please)
I live in a WH, I am the designated scanner of our group, I am in charge of
scanning down the signatures in the pocket we reside within.
I often find this task quite bothersome to do once a day and often
neglect my responsibility to my corp-mates which is quite inconveniencing
for them.
This started me thinking (something that is quite rare) and I thunk and thunk until I came up
with a few things that I felt would satisfy my CDO (the proper order of a thing you may call 'OCD')
and make it much easier to efficiently scan down a myriad of signatures.

(VVV If you skipped, here is a good place to start reading VVV)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------l
My set up for showing my idea will be as follows:

Title (general idea)
Parts of the idea

Followed by how I think the change would benefit me and other people.

(Then what I edits I have made)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------l

My ideas:

Core Ideas:

1. Implement a setting that has a grid system.
-Have a mode where you have a 2 Dimensional overview of the solar system where you currently scanning.
There would be a grid overlapping this overview, with this grid you would be able to mark of section that you have already
scanned. This option would make it more difficult for players to loose their spot while scanning.

The grid elimination system would likely be used most for people like me who have to go over and check bookmarks for signatures that may have de-spawned (I have a proposed system for this arduous process as well).

-(Removed 3D Grid idea, the only way anyone could really judge it is if there was actually something you could play with.)

2. Improve the system of eliminating signatures (ignored results).
-Allow people access to an undo function, re-insert the recently ignored results.

Additionally living in a wormhole as I do, I find that there are constantly new signatures (WH appearing), I do not leave my EVE client running all day, because of this I have to go through and take out all of the signatures that I have already scanned earlier that day, this can be from 5 - 20ish signatures.

(Removed the idea for having the same ignored results each day.)

3. Extra functions for Probes.
-Have a snap-to function which moves the middle point of the probes to a bookmark.

The middle point (where the green lines meet) will be placed on the select bookmark, the player will be reproducible for resizing the probe. This function will save a few seconds and for people who live in wormholes (like me) have to deal with many bookmarks of things like Grav, Mag, Ladar, Radar, and Worm Holes. This would only work for bookmarks, and most definitely not for scanning ships.

(Removed preset shapes, Rammix was correct in saying this would make combat scanning much to fast.)
(I still want a snap function for bookmarks as those are the most bothersome and would help scan time for things you have already scanned.)

Extra Ideas (More so concepts.):

1. Co-operative Scanning.
-Allow people in a corporation and/or fleet, to see each others probes and their ignored list.

This would allow people to work together to scan down a system. One person could see, "Oh, my teammate is scanning that already, I can move to the next thing."
I think this would be an improvement to a very work intensive system, allowing people to work together possibly lightening the load off one person.

I may add more Ideas to this if people suggest them and/or I actually take time and think about this some more :P

Thanks for reading!
Please comment on what you think about these ideas, I do look forwards to some feedback :)

(Again, I may [will likely] expand on this further)

-Have an option that allows a 3 Dimensional grid.
How would this be displayed? I cant see a way where it isnt cluttering the screen like hell.
A 2d grid with 1au squares could be good tho.

-Allow people access to an undo function, re-insert the recently ignored results.
You can already do this

Other then that you should (if you aren't already) try using a shared google docs sheet to share scanning results.

Number 2 is interesting, can be combined with extra1 in table of known signatures, shared with fleet members.

And prearranged probes would be nice.

dont scan myself cant really get into it but i like the idea how a 3d grid is gonna help i dunno exactly how a 2d griud helps i dunno but as i said i dont prob. But nice post

Allow people access to an undo function, re-insert the recently ignored results.

Allow people the ability to carry over their ignored results from previous sessions in that day (between downtimes).

1: Scan is already 3 dimensional.

2: No need. You can scan planet by planet - with 8 a.u. radius. Plus use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V.

3: No need. Just Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V the signature that is currently being scanned from the scanner into your corp channel or google docs or whatever.

4: Ctrl+C/Ctrl+v fits here as well. Scanned down something - copy it somewhere and continue scanning.

Names of new signatures differ from old ones. Like "oov, iiv, chv" + new one e.g. "psa".
More importantly, if you often have a lot of signatures in your home system, you're doing it wrong. Hunt, loot, hack etc in time and you'll forget about "too many signatures" problem. Or somebody will do it for you (like we did today in your system, kekeke, 0/).

Would be nice if weren't so bad. It lets to scan very (too) quickly. You will scan much faster, but your ass will get on fire very quickly if somebody launches combat probes. Now combat probes are visible for at least 20 seconds before somebody warps to you with bad intentions, plus some more time while probes are getting arranged (if in your d-scan range).

Michael MitchellM wrote:

-When you have a set arrangement for your probes, you have scale them in and out around their set middle point.

You can do it already: hold Alt and your probes will get closer/farther maintaining their position.

No need. See above why.
Maybe except one thing: would by nice to be able to open ignored signatures as a list and edit / copy its content freely.

No!

Living in a wormhole is all about scanning. You should become quite fast at it, and so should all your fellow corp members.

Scanning has been made so conveniently already.

  • You can move all your probes at once, without loosing your formation,
  • the max scan strength was increased,
  • the signatures no longer have random IDs,
  • signature IDs stay the same between downtimes,
  • bookmarks can be shared with corporation members.
  • etc..

I mean.. there is people scanning down 24 sigs in 11 minutes.

If anything, scanning should be made harder (require more skill), instead of being made even easier. If you feel scanning is not easy enough, maybe wormholes are not for you?

Hello!
I took into consideration what people said, I made some edits.

I do not agree that scanning should be harder,
there are something that could be done to make routine scanning faster.

I do not think that Combat Scanning should be changed.
I am proposing a Core Scanning change because it is the same thing everyday for some people,
and there are ways that it could be improved. Maybe some of my Ideas are a bit too much, but I really want
to see some better utility for marking (in-game) things like bookmarks or quadrants of space, saying that you are done there and do not need to rescan it.

Thanks you all for your criticisms.

Quadrants? Why to make scanning more discrete? It would be a step backward.

I've said already and repeat: if you have too many signatures then your usage of your own system is too bad. Consider leaving wh-space and looking for a place where your energy/abilities fit better.

There MUST NOT be gathered 10+ or even 15+ sigs in one system, it's not normal. You're (I mean your corp) too few or too low-skilled or too lazy if you let so many sigs stay untouched.

And, I agree with Elisa, scanning in wh-space is made just right, maybe sometimes even gets too easy.
Upgrade your skills (astrometrics 4-5, pinpointing 3-4-5, rangefinding 3-4-5, aquisition 3-4) use a T2 probe launcher or its faction variation, use 7-8 probes and do your ratting well and often - and scanning will not be a problem.
