There's a lot of tools that will help you decide whether or not a particular job is worth the risk, taking your skills and tools into account. I'd recommended trying one like http://www.fuzzwork.co.uk/invention/ before throwing too much time and money into it.

I'd suspect you're trying ship invention, with that fail rate. Be aware, ship invention is often not worth it, profit wise.

Take a look at it on my blueprint calculator to see the numbers. (Invention now built in Smile added that last week.)

It also sounds like you've hit a patch of bad luck. Having now run into the thousands of runs complete, I'm seeing on average I'm hitting the right kind of rates. But it's /very/ patchy at times. Random is random.

Yeah, at 2 out of 15 you have to be doing ship invention. Once you start producing hundreds of thousands of invention jobs you'll see it start to even out and be closer and truer to the percentage chance you have.

Just looking at the current output of the industry jobs API:

181 total completed jobs (it doesn't go back that far)
80 successes.
101 failures.

Pretty much the numbers I'd expect to be hitting (a few percent low. not a huge deal)

I've had some bad streaks - (fail 7 out of 8 on drones) and I've had some good ones (success on 3 of 5 marauders). Over time, you do hit the odds. After 100+ invention jobs, you should be within 5% of nominal. If not, you are either very lucky or very unlucky. When my invention luck is down, I refill my glass and guns and then go shoot stuff. I also blame a particular corp mate for stealing my luck and go shoot him. Twisted

Indeed, you need some serious ISK backed up to start with anything bigger then a frigate.

A friend of mines was just telling me how he failed 21 battleship prints in a row, Max skills may I add, each one cost him about 11M isk (fuel chip BPC) not to mention the time he lost which makes it an even bigger loss, maybe 20M per run.

Point is, Ships are a whole different game, its a million gambles put into 1.

I damn well hope so. It's how I read it the first time, due to the normal form for these topics.

at 13 out of 15 successes, the inventor would have to be a kittens to complain about it.

Try out this spreadsheet I made. LInk

It uses the EVE API to automatically get all of the industry jobs you completed. To check if your % rly is what you thought it to be. And it's rly simple to use.

Having just started doing t2 power diagnostics (l2 in all skills), I am doing one in 3 for success.
Now given each mod costs ~400k to make, the failures add only 50k per mod.
Given I sell each mod for 700k profit is 250k each for a base of 2.5 mil per 17 hours per production line.

Blink

I'm showing a cost of 170k per successful run (minimal skills), or 140k perfect skills.

with that subtracted from the selling price of 700k, I'm showing an isk/hr of 154,000 or so. (discounting the cost for the blueprint, and the invention time)

My nano electrical are 11k each higher than the list price+I am counting in the invention cost.
It is 800k per invention attempt for me.
So 80k per try per mod.

Inventing T2 Missiles here with a 52.7 % success rate on paper. Even just starting out (only about 100 jobs so far) I'm around the 50% mark on successes.

Getting a decent meta item really boosts your chances. If I wasn't using Caldari Navy Missiles (Meta 2) My chances would be more like 47%.

Either way, use the calculators suggested in the thread and do the math to see if it will be profitable.

In the cat-and-mouse game that is low sec, there is no shame in learning to be a better mouse.
