Odd Router Issue

Hi Guys,

I am after adice on an odd router problem that I have.

My router keeps dropping. Nothing odd in that I guess, but it only drops in the most strange way. Whenever I leae my computer desk. It's not just a case of it refusing to talk to my computer, it also refuses to talk to anything else, I have tested it with my Ipad too. It usually means that I have to close everything down and do a total reboot of everything.

The Router is one of the older Belkin wireless types, though because my computer is not wireless they are connected by way of an ethernet cable. Usually the only other internet thing I have going when I am playing Eve is the BBC iPlayer; that usually gives me the first clue that the router has gone on strike, when that stops.

The Router is physically placed on the shelf under my desk, with the computer on a stand next to it. I am guessing that I am soon going to have to get a new one, I have had my moneies worth out of this one, but it is such an 'odd' issue. and I was wondering if anybody has come across anything like this too.

Bio breaks and grabbing a fresh coffe have become something of a race now, with me often as not loosing out.

Thanks in advance

Max

If you sit there and do nothing at all, just stare blankly at the wall, does it drop? If not, have you checked to see if your chair is tugging on a wire ? Happens sometimes. Metal chair near a wire coil ... strager things have happened.

Have you tested leaving the desk while having your computer ping something on the internet? Perhaps the router goes idle and goes to sleep, any settings for that kind of thing? Any settings upstream from your ISP for that kind of thing? QoS and the like? Ask them.

Even wired devices stop working? Does it drop any packets while you're at the desk and it's communicating normally? (Use PingPlotter)

Do you roll over any cables?

Does it stop working as soon as you get out of the chair or is there something specific (such as monitors or computer going into sleep mode) that happens first?

How many devices are connected, and at what rates?

If your router has a log, are there any messages that coincide with the times it's stopped working?

Are the lights on (and correct) on the router when it's stopped responding?

Assuming you're running windows, next time it fails try the following on your wired ethernet computer:

Start->run

Type "cmd" and hit enter

Type "ipconfig /release" without quotes and press enter

Type "ipconfig /renew" without quotes and press enter again. Wait till the prompt returns. Does it say there's an error of any kind, or does it show valid ip config info? If it shows valid info, does the internet work again and can you ping the router?

Could it something like the weight of you in your chair bowing a floorboard which is causing something to move?

Im not actually thinking it is this ... but just in case.

Most routers in the WAN/Internet setup option page of your router there is the options of 'DoD/Dial on Demand' and 'Keep Alive' (sometimes refered to as Pinned Up and a few other things that generally mean dont drop the line ever.

See if any of those are set wrong.

Do a google search for DD-WRT and look at their compatible router list. Choose one of those and install DD-WRT on it. You will not be able to get a better router for less money than this. DD-WRT firmware is open-source and free. It enables your cheap home router with functionality you would expect in entry level business and enterprise models. You'll be able to get VoIP, QoS, and alot of other technical mumbo-jumbo. This might not be interesting at all for you. But the fact that DD-WRT is so damn stable will be.

I ran a WRT54GL from linksys for over three years during this time the router stopped working only three or four times despite heavy usage and usage that required a large amount of connections to be held open (seeding more than 200 torrents and constant downloading using the torrent protocol) when the router would stop working all I had to do was rebooting it.

This.

DD-WRT is fantastic. I have it on both of my routers, one of which is being used as a wireless bridge to the entertainment center (since I REALLY didn't want to lay 100' of CAT5 cable in the attic and down a wall). I'm using a pair of WRT54GL, and the only time my routers don't work is when the power is out.

The birding option is awesome. We had a LAN party once so we set up two routers in bridge mode and cranked up the RF power from 33mW (highest legal output unless the card/router is specified for more) to 200mW, needless to say even with the ****** rubber duck antennas that came with the router we got excellent reception despite not having a clear view between the routers and the distance was like 100 meters.

I used to love linksys routers, but lately, I've had nothing but problems. Same applies to d-link. More recently, I've had pretty good luck with netgear.

I'm not a fan of wireless, but for wired internet, try and find an old D-Link Gamer Lounge router. Been rock steady so far...
