Invariably this has nothing to do directly with CCP, but rather with the providers over whose lines people connect to the EVE servers.

It's quite variable, actually. There have been quite a few instances where CCP has fixed these issues by getting rid of bugs, and if it was not in their code, people with the same providers would consistently have the same problems… in this case, they don't.

I thought it was a combination of the two. Wasn't there an issue where the sockets started closing right after a new patch or something?

I've never had a socket issue in over two years, it must be something on your end.

That's funny because one day while 5 clients were being played over my network one of them was cursed with the socket connection problem. Two clients on the same machine (two clients on a second and a third on client on a third machine) and only one of the accounts would socket d/c over and over with the time online varying from 15 to 130 minutes before another socket error.

What was really amusing was when one of the clients d/ced with an error saying something to the effect of "the shard/server/whatever this character was on crashed" meanwhile all our other characters which were right next to that character never had a problem.

Neither had I before Inferno 1.1. After that, I have it under OSX but not Windows on one machine; under Windows but not OSX on another, and not at all on two others with different OSes…

…so it's not the OS, it's not the hardware, it's not the connection. So that rather leaves out a lot of local things that could be the differentiating factors and keeps constant a lot of things that might have changed. Except EVE itself. And it's not like the client hasn't been the cause of closed sockets on a number of previous occasions.

The easiest way to help CCP stop things like random socket closings is to petition it, or mail them and tell them "Hey, this is what's going wrong". Since the thread just went all sorts of troll shaped, I'll be locking this now.
