I believe "friends" refers to an old Celtic term meaning to see other people with your eyes and not via a screen.

The reference is old and not too clear or understandable, it goes on to mention physical contact, like shaking your hand at their hand.

Frankly the whole thing seems kind of sickening.

Any spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors are because frankly, I don't care!!

They are the people that you now outside of EvE that you are constantly pester to start playing EvE so that they can actually have people join your corporation that you can actually trust somewhat. So think of them as a potential investment in enhancing your position in EvE.
