So as the topic reads, I just moved out from security and comfort of mum's to my own apartment.
I'm just looking to get some advice and clever tips on saving money in everyday life and stuff like that.

I haven't decorated the place but it will be some mix of Ikea and various second hand stores in order to save cash. Looked at some horrid lion statues that I figured could look cool and modern if I spray painted them in bright green or orange.

Please give me your best home improvement and decorating ideas, I want my place to be truly nice and comfortable both for my bum and eye. For example there are some holes drilled by the previous dwellers of the apartment and I'm not allowed to repaint and refurbish the place as I rent it second hand. Is there a quick fix for that? How would it look if I for example just bought some plaster and white paint and covered up the holes up with?

Please give me your best tips on how to save money so i can save up a buffer then spend alot of cash on delicious stuff like mortadella, mozzarella and procuitto de parma and various other stuff i like to indulge myself with...

P.S I live in Sweden D.S

tl:dr; Whats your best cheap quick fixes for home improvement and best tips for saving money in every day life?
All ideas welcome, even bad ones for the sake of good luaghs!

I would but I'm still on a trail contract at work so that means I can't take a bank loan until the Swedish Army can provide me with a longer contract I'm forced to rent.

Only if you enjoy having a huge debt hanging over you for 20-30 years, or until you sell, and evne that is a gamble. More so in this "unstable economy".

One word Kegerator. Basically you take an old working fridge and fix it to where a keg fits inside to stay cool and the tap is outside on the door or side wall. This way you are buying your beer in bulk (a Keg) and saving on what it would cost by the 6-pack or even case.

Actually while cool I know it was not what you are looking for. In my bachleor pad I had a huge wooden spool like gable or power wire comes on as a dining table and a smaller one as a lamp table beside one of several salvaged chairs and a couch. I also had a matress on the floor at least till I found a bedframe and eventually headboard. In other words I scrounged and most if not all the furnishings were free except the tv and stero both being top of the line for back then. If you were in the US I would say frequent your local Craigslist free stuff section or see if there was a local frecycle group. However being from Sweden I am not sure they have such a thing.

Milk crates, cinder blocks and 1x6 boards make great shelving.

Have a separate area for eating...crumbs on the couch add up and attract vermin.

Get a bed frame...don't just do the mattress on the floor thing (see note above regarding vermin)

Brush your teeth every day.

If you see furniture on the side of the road...it's not totally awful to take it home if it's clean...but if it has rained...leave it. It will mold and smell.

Craigslist is a great resource for used furniture.

Mirrors (on the walls) make a room look bigger.

If your parents offer to buy you something to get started, make it a bed. Or take your old one with you. IMO, there's something about used mattresses that make my skin crawl.

Good luck. Cheap & clean > expensive & dirty.

Already got a bed! So that's sorted. I like the kegerator idea, but Sweden is ******** because you can't buy kegs.

Don't listen to the guy that said to get furniture from the curb, that's how I ended up with bedbugs a few years ago. Found a perfectly decent couch, brought it home, suddenly BEDBUGS Evil! And they are incredibly difficult and expensive to kill.

I use a lot of milk crates, because I like the look, and they are free! I've also made a couch out of pallets, carpeting, and some plushy throw pillows. It sounds a lot trashier then it really is, if you do a good job. People have asked me where I bought my couch before, I just laugh and show them how it's done.

My dining set actually came from craigslist, I saw a post for an estate sale, went out, saw a BEAUTIFUL walnut table with chairs, picked it up for $100 and dinner and beer for my friend with a truck. Just keep an eye out, take your time, the deals/steals will eventually come.

As for the whole renting vs. owning thing..... I rent. At least where I live, I'd be paying as much on house payment/insurance/taxes/bills as I spend on rent, and a house is only worth owning (to me) if it's the one I really want. Besides, how many people are in the position to buy a house right after they move out of their parents? I wasn't, and I don't think that many people are. I've been saving money for a long time, so I can find a cheaper fix'r up'r, and put myself into as little debt as possible when I go to buy it. Save your money, live frugally, and then when you find that incredible "thing", you'll have the resources to take advantage.

Hang a few tapestries over large open areas of the walls. They're super cheap and make the atmosphere a lot warmer.

Check multiple second hand stores. One visit a week, going to different stores each time, will give you access to interesting furnishings that fit your personal style. I personally am a fan of kerosene lanterns, so I have about ten of them scattered around my place that were all purchased from second hand stores. If you're consistent about what you like, you will end up with a consistent decorating style.

Also, if you're going the second hand store route, don't feel pressured to buy all your stuff in one go. You have to keep checking to get good stuff.

That video was pretty cool! I like the paper-bottle vase thing! Some of the ideas seem pretty useless like the bottle table but others incredibly cool.

Learn how to budget weekly/monthly.
Learn how to cook*.
Learn how to shop economically for groceries.
Learn how to do your own laundry.

The first three will save you oodles.

*real cooking with real food, not the insta-quick stuffs TV dinner like frozen lasagne etc etc.

This one is going to come as a shocker (I know it did for me). Hopefully I can save you the weeks of messy smelly confusion that I went through...

The toilet paper in the bathroom? You actually have to buy that stuff yourself and replace the roll when it runs out.

Yeah, I know, isn't that screwed up?
And don't even get me started on garbage and laundry.... I swear it's all a conspiracy to steal away from my Eve time.

I fixed my own plumbing. did just fine. it was just a matter of finding out exactly what I was dealing with beforehand.

as to saving money, if you can, go with minimalist decoration and furnishings. in my case, my furnishings are my decoration.

I like where that video is coming from, but I think that some of the "projects" in there are a little bit over the top (or perhaps I should say "under the bottom" in this case). If you make tables by placing a piece of fiberboard on top of a magazine with curled up pages, and then use a shoebox for a lamp shade, it will just make it look like you're too lazy to bother looking for furnishings.

I'm all for do-it-yourself, but a shoebox lampshade? Really?

For the holes in the walls, you can use silicone.
Or get some glue and use bits of similar wallpaper and put bits over the holes.
