Uninstalling Eve = no executable file associations anymore

I installed Eve on a fairly fresh XP Pro x32. I had minor graphical issues such as planets not transitioning to the scan state after scanning for minerals. I also could not hear the sound of probes being deployed. However, the biggest issue by far was after I tried to uninstall Eve. I was planning to reinstall the game to try and clear up those minor issues. After the game was finished uninstalling, I chose to remove settings and cache. As soon as I hit next, all of my executable file type associations were destroyed. Anyting that relied on this became a .lnk extension instead. Windows had absolutely no idea what to do with my files anymore.

I couldn't open anything useful to fix the issue. I've seen this problem before on someone else's computer, but can't create a correlation between the two as that user and myself have completely different habits. There is a registry fix for file associations being lost, unfortunately I could not use my browser any longer to go download that fix.

I had to resort to a system restore to fix the issue. Afterwards, I decided to try and uninstall Eve again. The same issue happened. As soon as I completed the uninstall, my file associations were removed again. Now I'm on the second system restore and I'm going back to Win 7 x64 (For stability issues with an ARPG I'm playing). I already have most of my things transferred to the backups and setup my recovery kit for the new OS.

Something else that was odd. Eve didn't install the programs menu directories correctly. Instead of housing all the program files in a folder after the installation, typical of most installed programs, it decided to throw away the folder and just leave the files out in the open in the programs menu. (Not Program Files)

I've not had stability issues since this OS has been in use, which is several months. I have had compatibility issues with Path of Exile, but this is a problem on GGG's end and they openly admit it.

This exact issue has been happening to me on a Win7 x64 rig. Sadly, I will now be undergoing my 2nd System Restore, as I didn't know what was causing my exe's to break and my browser settings to reset, etc. etc.

It's uncommon that only me and this one other guy have the issue?

What is this registry fix you mention but don't actually direct anyone to?

And here's the kickerest of the situation: I damn-near hate this game. It doesn't hold my attention for more than a day and a half, I'm running on a 14-day trial and am glad I don't send this company money, now more than ever.

It happened to me today twice, Windows XP machine. Both times I clicked on delete caches and preferences.

And sucks pretty bad.

System restoring again.

It's not easy to solve as you can't use system restore any more, you need to enter in command line mode and execute there manually, it's explained here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449/en-us

More info, it does not matter if you click on "Remove cache...", it's the file uninstaller that screws up everything deleting lots of stuff that should not. If you click on details you will see terrified what has done.

Third time system restoring (it only takes like 45 min!) XXX
