Changing phone soon, dare I move from Apple?

Being the owner of an iPhone 3GS for almost 2 years, I find myself in a position to upgrade.

The natural progression is of course to the new iPhone 4S.

However, I am having naughty thoughts. Thoughts of straying away.

I really like the look of the Samsung Galaxy S2. Is this a radical move? And will I lose all my music as I am iTunes's ***** at the moment?

Thoughts?

It's not a radical move at all. You'll spend 2-4 hours getting used to navigating android and doing basic stuff, which is probably the same time it took you to getting used to the iPhone. After that you will start love the back and search button. Because they are truly convenient.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 is an excellent Phone. It has outstanding battery life and is the fastest phone on the market. You will also love the fact that is has a bigger screen, it's much better for web browsing. I own a LG Optimus 3D wich has a screen of comparable size to the Galazy S2, and whenever i borrow a friends iPhone I find myself longing back to the bigger screen i've grown used to.

Your DRM protected iTunes music should move to your new phone without any major issues. Android is compatible with DRM.

I have the galaxy Sii myself and it is as sweet a phone as you can get.

The screen is gorgeous - while it doesn't have the same density as the retina panel, it hardly matters, since you have to use a magnifying glass to notice pixels on it. The colours and brightness are stunning and it actually has a setting for normal, daylight or movie mode lighting.

The processor and ram combo means it will play hi-def movies, the 8mp camera records hi-def, and you can get an HDMI adapter for it so you can playback on your TV.

Using VNC and my PC I have played EvE on it while wandering around the house. Streaming movies to it is great. BBCiPlayer and true adobe flash 10+ support for youtube etc out of the box, and if you are bold, you can root it.

Samsung made moddability a feature. They support it in a demi official way...

It gives you 16gb onboard memory with a slot for a micro-SD card up to 32gb (although there are rumours of a 64gb card but dont quote me on that)

Most of the apps you have on the iPhone are available on the Android Market and probably free to boot. (Angry Birds is fully free on the AM for example)

It plays MP3's and doesnt care how they get there, I copied mine over wifi but you can connect via USB and copy-paste etc and the phone will pick them up no hassle.

In all, good phone, worth the cost and it immediatly liberates you from being the property of Apple.

Yep, you might take some time converting the music (It's possible to get drm-free MP3s from iTunes music). But I never looked back from there.

Plus you can change the battery and add a SD card for memory!

recently went from an iphone 4 to a Samsung Galaxy S II, nice phone, huge screen - seriously it felt massive when i first picked it up - some things take a bit to get used to but overall the only complaint i could make about Droid vs IOS is that when i turn the phone landscape i can't see any messages any more.

the phone itself. great power, battery life seems to be about the same - i wind up charging it every night same as i did the iphone 4 - the samsung does feel a little.. plasticky at first after using an iphone but get yourself a nice case and your golden

although truth be told i am wishing i 'd waited a month and picked up that snazzy HTC Sensation XE or whatever it's called..

Pro - no more itunes, no more quicktime, no more of the device being locked down to the point you have to jailbreak it just to watch a movie in .avi format, oh and i believe the S2 has a proper aspect ratio as well which is nice

cons - no little 'letterbox' to see messages when turned sideways, S2 feels a little flimsy compared to the iphone 4

also it's really nice to be able to just plug my phone into any computer and be able to edit the music / movies on there..

Great replies so far thanks! Potentially silly question, can I still use my iPhone out of contract as an iPod and still use iTunes on it? I ask as it would be a handy backup. It might seem a waste but there's stuff on the iPhone that might not be readily transferrable, or available on android.

It might need a sim card to start up, but I am not sure about that.

Absolutely. Android has about the same learning curve (as others have mentioned), and the phones generally are incredible. I have a Samsung Droid Charge (Verizon Wireless), and my wife has an HTC Inspire (AT&T Wireless). Both have good feature sets, and the Droid has the same AMOLED screen as the Galaxy S2, IIRC. Samsung's screens are absolutely stunning, to say the least, and functionality is good, too.

I've had a Moto Droid since shortly after they came out. Love it, wouldn't dare go to Apple after using Android this long.

I did thought of getting a smart phone. Especially galaxy s II, but in the end, I rather have just a regular cell phone and a tablet. Verizon Galaxy Tab 10.1. Did not regret so far :-)

The more I read, the more I lean towards the Galaxy. Please keep the debate going, I have time yet to make a decision!
