Optional Newbie Mission

Reviving an old idea not only because of all the whining about "the new player experience sucks" but also because I believe this to be a genuinely good idea with many benefits in the long run.
________

Basically a newbie is given an optional mission that would clearly explain, "your ship is a tool that can help you achieve your goals. While keeping your ship alive is encouraged, sometimes you must risk its destruction to gain greater rewards."

Then the missions details are explained. The missions would choose a random 0.0 system (one that hasn't seen too much traffic and is within 2 to 3 jumps of high-sec), would give you a Teir 1 "speed" frigate with a MWD, and require you to fly out to said system. Nothing more. Just get there alive. Getting back alive isn't required.

A small warning in red text about PODs and how they must be kept updated should be somewhere in the mission's briefing as well.

The reward for such a mission should be something that a genuine newbie would get all excited about but not something that wouldn't really be worth the time of a veteran to farm.

Make it a bit further than 2-3 jumps out, with a reward that increases depending on how far out they get. Say, 5-10 waypoints, each further out than the last. Big smile

I thought about that... but that might open it up to abuse by people who are a part of established 0.0 alliances.

Plus, realistically... a newbie isn't going to survive out in 0.0 for very long. And that's kind of the point. The underlying idea is to get a newbie's first death "out of the way" and loosen them up. And hey... some alliances might find this as a way to recruit people (yes, yes... idealism... *sigh*).

Set the reward at a few mil. Pocket change for a veteran, but a fortune for a newbie, and make it once per character. It'd be abusable by newbies in nullsec corps already, yeah, but the comparatively low reward compared with ratting or salvaging shouldn't make it all that attractive, I'd hope.

I know they wouldn't survive for long, but escalating rewards leads to them trying to push deeper in, and who knows, newbie makes it out to, say, Syndicate, they might settle down out there. (We can all dream. Also, doing that and dying fast was my first taste of nullsec <__<)

I like the idea but I would like to take it further. Instead of just make them just fly out there, make them engage any non-npc ship in low or nul. Don't have to win to beat the mission, just a ship needs to die yours or the enemy's. I bet at the very least 1/10 would be coming home ship intact with a shinny new killmail.

Heh, I bet you 10/10 would engage on gate in low sec and explode to gate guns. These are brand new players remember Lol

I would like to see some kind of "go try low/null" early mission though, even if its literally just to give them a frigate and tell them to go fetch an item from a deadspace pocket in nearby low sec.

New players seem to build up some unhealthy fear of low and null, that perception of the "wall of gate camps" really stops them progressing in the game.

Don't they already have tons of missions about losing your ship and suicide?

Space. It seems to go on and on forever. But then you get to the end and a gorilla starts throwing barrels at you.
