Alright.

We just blew up a 5 day old noob in a Sigil who parked in our low sec station. It was very obvious this was an authentic certified noob (literally still had his noob certificates in his cargohold still). My colleagues also gave him the fast trip home via Pod Express.

I felt a bit bad, so I tried to pop a convo with him which he quickly refused. Realizing it was gonna take a little more than that, I sent him 5m ISK and a letter saying to not get discouraged.

Sent you some ISK for the loss. You seem new, don't be discouraged. :)

To: NoobFormerlyKnownAsDead,

Welcome to EVE.

EVE is about how good you are at the game as a person. There's a lot of things you could have done to be safe. In EVE information is power.

As I'm sure you can imagine, it's not uncommon for new players to get blown up. It's also pretty common for older players to help out newer players even if they do blow them up. So, I'm just keeping up a noble tradition of encouraging new players to accept losses as part of the game and learn from them. :)

To the new players out there. I can't promise the first time someone waxes you off the face of the star glittered beautiful nebulae background of EVE they will be as kind (the first time I was blown up, I didn't receive a letter, a hug, or an ISK donation. I was violated and left to hang alone.) But don't be afraid to go out there. Just remember to learn and have some fun while doing it.

The dangers are many, the rewards are greater.

Good on you for helping him. Sounds weird to see a 5 day old character in lowsec though, wow.

This reminds me... I think I'm gonna go back to my starter system and put my newb tag back in my cargo hold.

That way, anybody who pops me while I'm ninja'ing them will get a good laugh.

Edit:

Crap... missed a perfectly good opportunity to beg for isk, since you're giving it to new folks. Guess I'll have to steal it from you later.

I don't think you should have given him the 5m isk. The hard lesson that you've just provided for him, free of charge, is likely wasted because of it.

He had about 5 people undock to kill him and he was pretty viciously podded. I'd say a little ISK lubricates what was a pretty vicious attack. :)

I was ready to post about how awesome you and your mates must feel crushing a new player that has neither the skill nor equipment to adequately defend himself (even if he knew how), but then I actually read your entire post and your mail to him and realied that you handled this pretty fairly.

As a player only a few days old I snuck into low sec space and lost my "uber" (LOL you can tell I'm a noob) Thrasher all decked out in the best stuff my starting area had that I could afford. I had mined all weekend to get it all and literally as soon as I jumped through the gate a pirate cruiser (think it was a cruiser... I dunno I'm still rookie) ATE my ship in 4 blasts. While I was yelling oh sh** oh sh** oh sh** and trying frantically to align and warp out I watched my "weekend fortune" go up in a pretty little glittery explosion.

That was the first of many hard, but valuable lessons I'll need to learn if I want to continue playing. (At least the AI left my pod alone so I could slink back home). You likely did the guy a great service. It sucks, but hey it could have been worse.

So bad on you for picking on the little guy. Good on you for taking the time to say "hey guy sorry, but don't give up". It's rare to see that sort of thing.

It happens more often than you may think. It happened to me way back in 2006.

I did the same (paid 5m) when I mistook a newbie missioner as an enemy alt. We had a productive conversation.

Despite paying for his losses, he learned that he wasn't ready for (nor needed to be) missioning in low-sec. I think people are either teachable or not, and it's not really dependent on Isk. New-player morale is a different story; and the gesture helps, I think.

Reopen the EVE gate so we can invade Serenity. Goons can go first.

I do this all the time, and it's a funny way to recuit. I'd advise to scram the pod instead of killing it. A smart newbie will soon see answering your convo request might still prevent being visciously podded. Leave a splinter of hope for them, and they will be more susceptible for conversation. Moderation of violation is key if you wish to keep it light.

Also: a podkill will push the player out of local. A convo feels different when the recipient flies in space next to you, and you still have some hurt to dish out on their clone should the target be unresponsive to your intentions.

I usually reimburse their ship, and contract back their stuff, if they are good sports in the convo that follows. If they decide to join my corporation, I give them some extra ISK to pay for a few more disposable ships. The best ones are those that start asking tons of questions because they actually want to learn. PVP oriented players will head into lowsec pretty soon in their carreer (within the first week), and they are a whole other league from the newbies that cry and whine when killed for the first time.

You'd be surprised how much of an indication of intent an avatar can be. I get the best results with newbies who made a silly or badass avatar.
