Best advice: Dont.

A one man corp started by a player new to eve with nothing to offer recruits will never prosper.

Join another established corp, learn what it takes to run a multi member corp well, and when you have a acquired enough money, experience, and friends willing to follow you, break off and form your own corp.

You just have to remember people join corps because of what they offer them, like fleet boosts for miners, ship replacements for pvp players, or something as simple as having enough people in the corp already that they don't sit along in corp channel 95% of the time.

You are not ready to start a corp if you started this thread.

Ok, where to start ?

1) The larger a corp the easier it is to recruit because people join a group to be part of the group ... not to hang around in an empty channel.

So basically start interacting with people before you create a corp. Maybe join an existing corp.

2) A corp without a purpose is just another chat channel ... you can have one of those without the restraints of corp life.

What is your purpose or goal ? Is it something new that isn't being offered by 10000 other corps. Yeah, running missions and mining is soooo new.

3) People join to enjoy a certain playstyle. They may leave your corp for various reasons. Are you prepared to stay on course for the remaining people, possibly over years ?

4) Are you prepared to spend a lot of time doing all of the following:
- reading and replying to mails.
- sorting out corp roles, forum access, teamspeak access, hangar access ... basically all administrative tasks.
- having daily chats for recruitment, production / POS setup / war strategy / ship setup planning.

5) Are you ready to stay informed about game mechanics more then your average corpmembers ?

People will look up to you for all kinds of advice. If you can't at least point them roughly in the right direction, they will go and follow someone who can.

... yeah, that's about it.

Don't anger the forum gods.

One more thing: realise that starting or being in a corp means that you explicitly accept the possibility — some would say inevitability — of wardecs. If and when they happen, it's because you actively chose to allow them. They're the price you pay for the various benefits of having a corp.

1) Your own corp will make a nice tax shelter.

2) Don't worry about wardecs... no one in their right mind is going to waste the time and expense to dec one dude. You are more dangerous in a one man corp as the aggressor because they never know when you are going to be on, or where you will be. If the corp you dec has a lot of members you have a much better chance of catching a hauler w/ it's pants down (autopilot) in empire.

3) It is very difficult and time consuming to run a corp full of players... especially start one from nothing. If you plan on growing your corp, the guy above who told you to join a big corp and earn followers and then leave with them was giving you some good advice. If you just want to do your own thing however, starting your own corp is a no brainer.

Biggest piece of advice is to have a purpose

A random corp without a purpose is a corp waiting to die.

The other reason no-one ever decs one man corps is that they can disband at the drop of a hat.

I think it might also be important to mention that a lot of CEO's and corp directors in general end up doing a lot more meta-gaming rather than playing the game itself. Just something to keep in mind, Eve is a social game, so you'll possibly end up schmoozing, negotiating, planning and betraying more often than shooting **** as a CEO.

Having a purpose helps.

My alt was part of a corp that disbanded due to our newbish members. We disbanded because we were getting harassed by a 2 man corp with T3 ships.

So the corp leader started a channel allowing us to chat with each other exclusively, password to get in. We would follow the leader around doing lvl 4 missions. Great way to build up newbies, and a lot of fun.

I have two alts that maintain 'solo corps' for three specific reasons:

1. No taxes. If I want to pay 11% for mission loot and such to someone, I'll pay it back to myself. The 1.6 million isk start up cost for a corp is nothing when you are doing level 4 missions., that is one mission.
2. Wardec avoidance. No, I'm not proud of that statement, but if I want to go to war I'll go to 0.0. A new corp is 1.6 million isk. A wardec starts at 50mil isk... sure wardec me, I'll bounce.
3. Faction Warfare. I have a corp in FW so that when I am bored I can bounce to it and flight for the weekend and come Monday jump back to my daily grind without having to deal it the 24 hold rules, etc...

Right now I am in a 'regular corp' for the social aspect of it, but I have the other corps to fall back on if it all goes boom. The only other reason I use 'solo corps' is when I want to establish a POS in high-sec. That is something that I lost interest in, but I might go back to it someday.

Don't listen to these fools, one man corps are the new hotness. Eve is meant to be played alone. Trust. No. One.

Nothing wrong with making your own corp. You get the taxes!

It's a very minor thing to create your own. If you ever want to join a bigger corp just leave an alt in the one you made incase you want to come back to it later. You could just make a new one later if you leave it. There are thousands of corps now, adding a few more would do much harm. Sometimes I'm surprised about the number of people in npc corps. So much tax just thrown away.
