Breaking CovOps cloak on gate camps

Now, as far as I'm aware, when you jump into a camp, once you hit warp and hit the cloak on your CovOps, the only way even in theory for that cloak to not function, is for either

a) You've been targeted before you managed to activate cloak
b) You've gotten within 2000m of someone/something

I just jumped into a camp in a cheetah, and as I hit cloak, I got the message for the 3 sec cool down, which was a bit weird. I wasn't targeted at this point, nor was I closer than 8k to anything. Yet cloak failed and I went pop. They made it sound like there was some mechanic that would allow them to do this, but while I reckon they were trolling, I thought I'd put the question to the floor.

Is anyone aware of a mechanic that would allow you to decloak a cloaky ship at a gate? Say, by using a smart bomb radius or something?

Thanks

You named the only two reasons that other players can uncloak you.

It's possible that you were spam clicking your cloak and accidentally turned it on, then off. This activates a 5 second reactivation timer.

If you try to warp to quick your cloak will still be on cooldown from the last system.

I think this is your problem, you have 15 seconds cooldown, it isn't hard to warp to a gate, decloak, jump, reappear on the other side and try to warp / cloak too soon.

I heard somewhere that you can't cloak even if you're just in the process of being targeted. Though it sounds like the above answers are more likely.

Hows my posting? Call 1-800-747-7633 to leave feedback.

covops cloak cooldown is only like 3 or 5 sec total. Otherwise, yep, that.

though most likely did a "spam F1" and got a cloak/decloak, so started your timer as you were in a bad place.

This has happened to me on more than one occasion (haven't lost a ship to it, yet, though *knocks on wood*). If you land on a gate and decloak, jump, then immediately try to warp/cloak on the other side, your cloak will not engage because it's on cooldown.

And to prevent this, there is a 30 second 'Gate-cloak'

Use that to sit out the normal cloaks timer.

Sorry to be picky, but it's 60 seconds.

Thanks for the helpful replies, everyone. Yeah, there's a chance I just failed and spammed cloak a bit, though I'm pretty sure I didn't.

I did try to warp straight out though, and did have cloak active in previous system, so this thing about the cloak cooldown being active from the previous system sounds about right, and is something I had no idea was possible!

Will definitely test that out, and make sure to avoid it next time!

Thanks again, all!

Whenever you jump, be it through a gate or a wormhole, there is 2 timers you should always keep in mind.
First is the session change timer, it's getting shorter and shorter as an intent from CCP, but it can trick you badly if you forget it.
Second is the jump-cloak timer (and yes it's 60sec), that gives you some time to analyze the situation and make a decision.

The session change timer is more likely to **** you up with wormholes as you spawn in jump range, but until it ran out, you can't jump back so if you break cloak too fast you can be toast. There is an option in the ESC-menu to have a small icon appearing in the upperleft corner of the screen that shows this timer.

The jump-cloak timer however, is really usefull and important, it let's you look around and see what's hanging near the gate. Are there tornados? interdictors? a capital? How many in local? what's showing on dscan? All those questions, and more, can help you decide if you can warp or would be better crashing back to the gate. Though be warned, the gate flashes when you jump, that's often enough for some people to activate smartbombs or lop bombs on the gate.

Just with that, you should be clear to activate your cloak without any cooldown warning. The only thing that needs a proper timing, is breaking cloak to be able to turn on the MWD and the cloak, do it an instant too early and you may be screwed. Takes a bit of practice.
