EvE Online needs more mystery, Exploration needs a kick in the ass. Blackholes, Ghost ships, etc

When I first played started to play EvE online I was fascinated by all the things in space. I thought the stations were awesome, I thought asteroid belts were awesome, I didn't really care much for planets but whatever.

After a couple months I began to notice that 95% of all the systems in the game are the same generic thing. They either consist of belts, stations, gates, and planets. If you want anything else you can either scan something down or every once in a while find a static plex. And the things you scan down are generally very boring, besides wormholes of course.

Exploration sucks right now, which is a shame because I think if CCP can pull it off... exploration could be a load of fun, right now there isn't enough content for it to be as good as it could be. EvE is a space game and a space game with lame exploration is kinda silly.

What I think EvE needs is an "atmosphere/exploration" expansion. Basically what this expansion would do is add more things to the EvE sandbox and bring that sense of mystery to space. Think of all the Sci-FI space TV shows where a group of people explore space and find strange things on their way. (examples: Firefly, Stargate Universe, Battlestar Galactica, etc)

I would like to see things like Working Blackholes scattered around space. If you are foolish and get too close then your ship is stretched like spaghetti and you get sucked in. Imagine a noobs reaction to that! Once you are fairly nearby a blackhole for example, your ship's computer would give you a warning and then drawing a wireframe of the blackhole on your HUD. Now that would be something I'd like to see.

Where are the supernova? Who wouldn't like to see a massive explosion?

Instead of the normal small asteroid belts that are so common in the EvE universe, why not have super massive asteroid belts? They would basically be these huge areas with tons of rocks floating around.. Think of a regular Ice Belt but 10x bigger. And then imagine a bunch of people fighting in there. What I wouldn't do to be apart of that.

Then imagine flying around in 0.0 and all of a sudden your ship's computer informs of you a strange signal being picked up. Or even a strange message being transmitted from an unknown source. Things like that would really help add to the immersion in the game, which keeps it interesting.

Or what about pulsars? Get caught in one of their beams and you might have a problem on your hands. Twisted

Whiteholes, the opposite of blackholes: Could be a very pretty sight if you ever find one.

Huge clouds of gas that interfere with your sensors and electronics, now think of the stories you would tell of how you escaped some pirates because you were lucky enough to be near a massive cloud of gas and managed to lose them in it.

What about random supply depots that have containers of loot next to them. I can imagine finding one, and while I'm going to loot it a cloaky pirate or two uncloak and I have to fight for my ship. It would certainly beat fighting people on gates all the damn time.

Abandoned ships floating in space, more destroyed space stations, maybe a space station that is halfway through construction?, Large ship graveyards where massive battles once took place, the ideas are endless.

Now all of the stuff I just suggested I'm not 100% serious about being added to the game, I'd like to leave this kinda stuff to the professionals (devs) , but I think they are good examples of the general gist of what I'm thinking about. Right now I think the atmosphere and immersion of the game is lacking a bit. Sometimes you don't want to go blow somebody up or grind isk... but you'd rather just explore the galaxy and maybe you'd find somebody else doing the same thing and then you blow them up.

What do you guys think of an expansion adding more space elements? I'd take that over more ships and modules in a heartbeat. Discuss.

tl;dr : there is none, read the damn post.

Honestly, if you talk to the devs, this is probably the kind of stuff they wish they could be doing. I think that most of them are quite passionate about space, and the "wonder factor" that eve used to invoke in people (and still does to noobies).

The problem is that there are a lot of core mechanics in eve that need some serious re-working, which is going to take a LOT of time.

Devs are currently examining eve at its most basic lines of code to sort things out, and untangle them.

At the same time, they're looking at its most basic gameplay elements, and fixing what needs fixing.

I imagine the update cycle will go something like this:

Finish balancing frigs.

Balance cruisers

Balance battleships

Balance capitals?

Fix towers

Fix sov

Fix mining

Fix fringe gameplay (like exploration)

Add features

It does no good to put a coat of paint on something thats rotting from the inside.

Interesting post, it is good to hear that atleast the devs would like to do these types of things sometime.

Its kinda funny how after 10 years the priorities are still basic things like balancing ships and fixing small things.

I don't want to make a whine about incarna, but I will... If the time and effort that they put into making the station walking was put to improving the actual sandbox (space) I think EvE would be a much much better game right now.

I think once they fix these basic things their next expansion should be named EvE Online: Immersion :)

Apples and oranges.

WIS could have been a sandbox. They talked about having players able to own things in the station where people could go, like social places and stores.

They also want us to be able to smuggle by meeting face to face with people in station.

Thats still a sandbox.

To your OP, I think there are a ton of things that they can and will do in the future. For now, WH's are pretty awesome.

I kinda disagree with the order of development, I think it would be better to make the core gameplay (space) better before they branch off into something else.

WIS would be a great addition to a really well made space game, it would help add to the immersion. But I think the actual game needs to be better before they add something so different from what the original game is.

I have to agree with Loius on this one. The fact they are working on the game is enough to please me. Some people want balance some want new features and they have teams working on both. I for one could see where station walking could be fun but I also see why some people were so against it. I see your side, But I also don't see pushing it ahead of other things either. CCP has a (decent at times) history of release-fix. I guess my point is things like that are not far away. And they will add more things to space. But they can't bow to everyone at once. Ye time shall come.

Like everyone else, in a perfect world of infinite dev time, I would definitely want this.

I honestly think we might see it eventually. EVE's going to be around for a long time, and the "end goal" seems to be all things space and sci-fi.

Occasionally plays sober

I hope so too, obviously lmao.

We haven't seen any space or "exploration" related changes since 2006. And even those were minor changes.

I just hope they focus an entire expansion on making the space full of creative and thoughtful content.

Only time will tell now I suppose.

Actualy they got into some trouble with the community due to them NOT doing this and instead adding "jesus features" that weren't ready to exit the prototype stage.

If you are talking about the ASB, that thing is totally fine.

If not then IDK what you are talking about. lol.

Couldn't agree more. That's why i fell in love with Wormholes when i first moved into one. It had that whole exploration of the unknown feeling. Unfortunately it quickly faded away due to a lack of "randomness". It's always gonna be the same sleeper sites spawning, you'll always have access to whatever is the static you have , etc.

More "exploration" elements would definitely be a plus!

Yeah, exactly man.

Space should feel like space, not a big box with gates that lead to other boxes Lol

Players should be finding new and exciting things every time they undock.
