How about a compromise where each gun gets its own drawn icon to replace the render? Something that makes it easy to tell what it is at any size?

Maybe all three could be incorporated? Option to choose between Current Drawn Icons, the proposed Drawn Icons, or the Renders.
It would take absolutely nothing away from the people who didnt like the Renders - if they are causing slow loading simply use one of the Drawn Icons.
Would also be nice to get these for the new launchers too.

Proposal supported. New icons look professional. Old icons look cartoonish, and nothing like what's actually strapped to your ship. Performance difference in loading either is nothing - they're all icons, and you only noticed it because you're (a) running EVE on a dinosaur computer (whose fault?) or they were (b) overwriting the old icons in your cache for the first time.

Can't see the new icons on a dark background?

Possible solutions:
- Mouse over the icon and read the tooltip
- Place a small set of caliber/size numbers in the corner of the icon (that will by default be grey/white so easy to read)
- Harden the f*ck up

Stop holding EVE back because you are threatened by change.

I liked the new icons better too. They looked better. Just make it optional which set of icons the individual wants to use, and everyone wins.

I quite liked the newer icons too and was actually starting to get used to them before they were reverted. The old icons, while more instantly recognizable and practical, are ... well, old and therefore a bit boring.

What I would have done would have been to find some way of mass photoshopping the "photographs" of the new turret types such that they looked stylized and simplified, for ease of visual recognition (in the same way as the old painted icons are).

However they were done they just weren't instantly recognizable as small icons (especially in their slots in Fitting). Most especially, there didn't seem to be any difference in gun size in the icons, and that's very important (it's like all the gun "photographs" were "stretched to fit" the icon window).

The best option would have been to get an artist to paint icons of the new turret models in the art style of the old icons - but I'm guessing CCP didn't find enough money for that in their piggy bank.

I difference in gun size in the icons

I never had any issues telling Light/Heavy Electron/Blaster Cannons appart from eachother - even same size weapons were easy for me.
Same goes for all other turrets (Except, possibly, 220mm Vulcans and 800mm Repeating Artillery, but to be fair...)

Then again, that may just have been me starting the game during the new icons.

Why?
Aside from the fact that some of us simply liked them, the new Icons allowed us to tell in the fitting screen, in space and in the inventory what module was what. One could Quickly and Easily tell the Difference Between Mega Pulse Lasers and Dual Heavy Pulse Lasers - Neutron Blaster Cannons and Electron Blaster Cannos - 200mm and 250mm Railguns - without having to mouse over each module individually to find out its name.

I don't know what you're smoking, but the old icons can easily be told apart. They are very distinct. The new icons looked terrible, they were too dark to see very easily, and they all looked alike. Add to that that they took forever to load, especially when you had a lot of them in your cargo. I can agree that which one is shown should be optional, but the old icons should definitely be the default setting.

I agree that they can be told apart, type by type, however I think this is more of the point: You have one set of icons on your ship, and another set of icons in your inventory windows. Personally, it feels like I'm playing two separate video games. The icons in the menu are, factually, just plain -not- what I see on my ship. I totally respect graphical render limitations for stills, at least I think I'd struggle matching 3D icons to a flat texture format. However, I just couldn't imagine making a game where the menu icon is so different from the icon shown in the game world. It feels like a law you should never break if possible, IMO. The icon in the menu, should be exactly what you get. I see this in a lot of medieval/fantasy MMOs though, where the icons don't match up and it drives me up a wall. You buy the in-game product loving its menu-icon graphics, and when you put it on it's some other texture you totally abhor.

Again, though, I do respect technical limitations in game design. This is why I am posting here: in game design, I love giving players options. -If- it's easy to code, I am in staunch support of a toggle box. I don't think the icons looked terrible - they were exactly what you saw on your ships! I think the fault, if any, would be only in the darkness or "extreme contrast" that were mentioned in some other posts here. The shade of grey/green used for the hybrid turrets didn't match well with the transparent icon background that surrounded it (or the often-grey inventory window background colors most players have). Maybe if CCP can easily make the actual ship turret icons more visible , this would eliminate the issue entirely.

i also believe it should be an option let players decide what they like

Things like this drive me Insane. The Icons are meant to depict what the turrets are. Right now, they fail to do so.

The new ones are pretty terrible. Old ones on the other hand are easily identifiable and not overly complicated.

Oh god please stop re-rendering each icon every time i look at something in icon view.

bp icons whited out because of bad whatever is so incredibly stupid only a Unified inventory developer could think it was a good idea.

Your art team is making some very bad choices. what is with the dark background for ship views? who though that that was a good idea? why are the backs of our characters not lit? why do the turret animations have a stary sky instead of a white wall factory floor background? these are old issues but seriously what the hell does the bottom of the nighthawk look like? the only way i was ever able to see any detail was bumping the gamma on my monitors up so high it hurt to look at.

werent the old icons client stored anyways? what would the toggle cost in programming?

Its not possible to please all the people all the time, but it sure as hell is possible to Displease all the people, most of the time.

Ugh I hope they don't bring those back-- they were too dark and detailed to actually provide recognizable information. At least when you look at the old old new icons you know what guns you have fitted (although most of the time you just look at an ammo icon I guess v0v).

+1 for the original icons.

I am curious, when CCP went through and clean tthe database up, did the remove the old (new) icons?

If so, then it is possible what you want isn't even feasible. Without more dev time that is.

+1

I liked the new icons. The ability to choose between old and new icons would be great, and I can't see how that would be costly or difficult to implement. I could be wrong though. Would be nice to get a dev statement on this.
