Noob PvP advice

hello!

Fairly new player here. This is my second time at playing last time was a year ago when I played for about a month before unsubbing and deleting my character.

Now im back I wanted to get into more pvp but the fits on battleclinic are all done with t2 modules or require all skills to V to fit properly. There isn't anything for a very very new character to do pvp wise. Is it really just mission/mine while i wait for SP? I'd love to just get out there and fight some ppl (solo preferred) but still have an ok chance.

I was thinking of using the new noobships, specifically the reaper to do some really cheap pvp as i just get a free ship back.

Any ideas/advice?

THIS! And make sure you join the forums after you get accepted, that's where we keep the juicy intel! =)

But the jist of pvp mods for basic brawl setups

High slots

  • Small caliber weapons (biggest you can fit after you fit the rest, eventually though you'll fit these first)

Medium slots

  • 1mn microwarpdrive(or afterburner for 1v1s)
  • Shield extender if shield tanker
  • Warp scrambler first, stasis webifier if you have room

Low slots

  • Damage control
  • 200/400mm plate
  • Damage increasing modules
  • nanofiber or overdrive if nothing else will fit

As a brand new character you may have a tough time fitting all this so maybe noobships are the way, join a gang if thats the case until you can fit a frig out.

Just replace the T2 modules with meta 4 or 3 stuff and you'll be fine. Work towards T2 tank and guns, and Advanced Weapon Ugrades IV.

The big thing about T2 guns is the access to T2 ammo, that gives you more range or close range damage, but the actual dps difference from just T2 equipment is not that huge, it's the turret skill that gives you more boost.

Anyway, equipment is just the tool, how well you choose your opponents and how well you fly are more important.

Good luck!

The point of comparing fits on sites like BC is theorycrafting, finding out what the absolute maximums are. In order to be able to properly compare two fittings, you need to use the same set of skills, and thus it only makes sense to use an all level V character.

In reality obviously very few people have perfect skills, it's fine to be missing a few of the 5%s and 2%s. Sure, your raw numbers might be a few points less, but the general idea of the fitting stays the same.

Thanks for the help!

So far my idea for a reaper fit (not specifics just generalizations) goes like this:

High Slots:
2x Small 200m Auto Cannons I

Medium Slots:
1MN Afterburner
Warp Scrambler

Low Slots:
Overdrive Injector
Micro Power Core

Its really really cheap, even for me and skills can be trained in a day or two.

Why would you want to fly a Reaper into PvP combat? If you start out with the worst ship in the game, you'll lose almost every fight you get into, simply because your ship is so awful. Either way, it isn't free when you die as you're still paying for the modules every single time.

I think it would be better if you finished with the career agents before you do anything else. That way, you'll have a much better idea of what you're doing and some cash under your belt to reimburse early losses, which are sure to show up. I suggest you fly a Rifter with a fit rather similar to what Bacon suggested above. The Rifter is a great ship and it's really cheap. Just fit out like ten of them and go lose every last one. You'll probably get some kills and you'll learn a hell of a lot.

Also, you'll probably get more help in the new player section than in the morass that is general discussion.

If you are struggling to fit a ship properly, the best advice i can give is find ONE ship fit to train for. Like a good rifter or merlin. Train all the skills you need to fit and fly this ship well, including the navigation skills. Evemon (downloadable program) will allow you to download fits from battleclinic and will actually set up a skill training schedule for you to achieve that fit the fastest. It usually doesnt include all the navigation skills, which are cruicial to pvp, but will point out all the fitting skills.

Skill training is set up so that there are no shortcuts for at least the first 10M SP. Trying to pvp with crap skills is just going to get you blown up a lot. Its fine to be ok with that, like i was on my pvp toon.

Easiest solution: FLY IN A GROUP. While you are still getting your skills up for a frig and eventually a battlecruiser with a good t2 fit, fly a cheap t1 frig and just be prepared to play a specific role. One of the most important things you can do in a fleet is called tackle. You basically warp disrupt/scram and web the enemy so the rest of your fleet can dish out the dps. I dont know what ships you have trained for but unless you are amarr, there is a decent t1 frig that will be good for tackling.

FIND A ROLE MODEL. One thing is to learn how to do research yourself online while asking good questions to a really good pvper. This is why being in a good corp and alliance is important. But you really need someone to help you with your fits and talk about flying strategy for the role you would like to play in the fleet. Things like strengths and weaknesses of your ship, how to fly against different ship classes with your ship (frig, BC, BS), learn to shoot the drones first , learn how to dictate range, spar against different ships for fun, etc. Listen more than talk. Verify they are good by their killboard first. Don't listen to people that die a lot.

The bad news: If you cant fit a frig with t2 because of lack of skills, you shouldnt be flying it for pvp without expecting to die in a fire. Stick to missions while you get your skills up unless you are going to turn real money into isk to waste on ships you lose. The meta 4 stuff is a lot more expensive than the t2 and can literally double the value of your ship real fast.
