Hey all. I've been reading up on the game a little. I was just curious what the best avenue for ships would be? I want to do something in the way of combat whether that means pve or pvp but I'm not sure which faction would offer the best ships for such things.

Choice of which race of ships to train [before you crosstrain to the others] is more down to gameplay preference than role.

Caldari are the "sniper" race, favouring railguns, guided missiles, and ECM ewar to disrupt the ability of enemies to effectively fight back

Gallente are the short-range "brawler" race, favouring drones and blasters, and sensor damps + longrange warp scrambling ewar to force targets close, where their blasters can tear them apart

Amarr are the "broadsides" race - they have heavy armor plating, and lasers or unguided missiles which are good at mid-range - they will sit there, take your punishment, and deal it out in spades. Their ewar focuses on tracking distruption and capacitor warfare to win those straight-up slugfests by reducing the combat effectiveness of their enemies

Minmatar favour mobility and superior combat positioning to win engagements - their mix of projectiles and missiles deals multiple damage types at multiple ranges, while their ewar, webs and target painters, ensures they can keep targets at arm's length while still putting on the hurt

Do note that these are very vague generalisations - every race has ships which don't fit their standard gameplay profile, ships which use off-race tank or weapons - but on the whole, these are the vague kind of directions to go in.

Do note also that while a race may be described as favouring short or long range weapons, their bonuses will often allow them to do the opposite as well - e.g. a caldari raven can use torpedoes at short range instead of cruise missile, or a gallente megathron can fit railguns and be a great sniper platform.

And Strannix, to make matters even more confusing: There are ships that are better suited for PvE and others for PvP. With this being said, you may end up with two ships for each purpose. Granted, this is not a set requirement. A ship can do both roles, but many favor PvP or PvE.

Also, something IonCharge hasn't mentioned yet. The very first thing you want to decide is how are you going to withstand damage (tank). There are two options (actually three, but there are only two that really matter).

The first is shield tank: this is your first layer of defense. It's the "outer ring" on your hud. Shield tank ships are usually fast, versatile, and mostly ranged. Most Caldari and Minmatar ships are focused on shield tanking. It is usually "more direct"; i.e. you can rep up fast and it will allow you to respond quickly to incoming damage.

The second is the armor tank: The second layer of defense. This is the "central ring" on your hud. Armor tanks are somewhat the opposite of shield tank ships. Armor tanking is really all about: " I have this huge tritanium armor plate and I just add it to my ship", End result: The ship can withstand a lot, but is also very slow due to the added weight. As such, armor tanked ships tend to be close-range brawler type ships. Gallente and Amarr favor this type of tanking on most of their ships.

Oh and the third? It doesn't really matter, but it's "hull tanking". It's the structure ring (inner ring) on your hud. It's viable in some situations, but not on many ships.

So choose which kind of style you like most and how you prefer to tank it. After that, it's only a matter of research to find the right ships here.

Edit: now with a link that actually works.

Also, just to make it perfectly clear, your character's race does not matter at all. Any race can fly any other race's ship, all you have to do is train for it.

The only difference is that [Your chosen race] frigate skills come pre-trained to level 2, which is only about an hour and a half's worth of training.

Well as you can see I'm a rookie and even worse a 14 day's trail whose days are counted. I have been up and down on dif forum platforms and alike. I as well created a topic with the name "A Newcomers Request in Search for Guidance". If you like check it out, there might be some information’s you'll find helpful.

But as far as your question goes, none and all. Yea doesn't tell you much huh? Let me explain, as other prolly said before me every faction has some good and some not so good ships which can counter this and that while others can't. It’s a long story and the result wouldn't satisfy you. So I'll make it short and painless as people told me. Take whatever faction you prefer if for nothing ales for your Avatars look. Do you prefer to use Missiles or Lasers? Armor/Shield tanking? Let that guide you. In the end you'll be able to fly whatever you desire. Every faction will have at least 1 good if not excellent PvP ship as PvE ship.

But remember one thing, first learn to fly Frigs, then move step by step up. Don't rush for higher class ships if you'll lack the skill and experience to fly and use them to their “full” abilities. For in EvE bigger doesn’t always mean better.

Far more important are the right skills. If you are not sure of what you need check the link in Invis Sig or visit Sean Whedon and his "Nathan Whedon's Basic Skills for New Pilots " topic, which will explain more or less everything from A to Z.
