Local client simulation playback for better movies (Recording Demos that can be played back IG)

I just read the bit in the CSM notes where Two step brought up client side recording.

In case you missed it....

Allow clients to record the simulation data from a fight locally, and then play it back later. This gives the player the ability to concentrate on the fight while it's happening, and then afterwards play the fight back to make the video. Since it will be a replay of the entire simulation instead of just a video recording, the videographer will have the ability to move the camera, change displayed data, change camera angles, etc, etc.

This would be a GIANT boost for amateur video makers like myself, and I fully endorse and politely request that CCP devs give this suggestion some serious thought.

I support this

Great idea. That'll help me analyse my game after the fact, and figure out where I went wrong.

That would be absolutely amazing, not only from a technical standpoint where we can watch our fights after and focus on what we need to improve, but also from a video editing perspective - it would lead to some really cool EvE videos.

A lot of people in huge fleets don't want to record simply because it lags them even more, and lag in EvE, as we all know, is deadly. Replays would allow people to just play back the replay and record that as if it was the real thing. You'd get heaps of new effects/camera movements that you simply couldn't do in-game as well, as OP stated.

Love everything about it.

This is a very good point that I missed. Recording the video data using fraps is very computer intensive. Recording the simulation data is a simple matter of streaming to disk, data that your client is already receiving; and therefor the performance implications should be negligible.

Furthermore on that point, I can't imagine that this would take much time to code up (let's pick a number...maybe 300hrs?) as most of the stuff should already exist. I would not be surprised if CCP already has code laying around for streaming simulation data to disk for after the fact analysis. Surely they do this type of stuff all the time during testing(what's testing? Big smile). As for getting the client to playback the data, it would seem to me that should also be relatively easy to do as your are just playing back the simulation data and the client is just a fancy rendering interface.

Also, there seems to me to be very little risk in adding this feature. It's not an in game feature like FW rework, or incursion nerf, or even unified inventory. It can not (in any way I can imagine) negatively affect any play-style that currently exists as it doesn't actually change anything in game.

Lastly, it would be a tool for the EvE community to uses to create more "Free IP" for CCP. It's advertisements and word of mouth that CCP doesn't have to work for.

I can't find where he wrote it or what his name is, but the CCP guy that produced the AT videos and promo videos that recently moved on to a new job said it best (to paraphrase, because I can't find the original quote):

Quote:
Eve is gorgeous to look at. It is really easy to just load up the game, start up fraps, fly around a little bit, and get some awesome looking footage.

I could not possibly agree more with that sentiment. Please give us the tools to lets us show this beautiful game to others!
